Probably using the hidden recovery partition on the hard drive.

Wait............this is cockeyed.

I followed all the directions and set up stuff and keep getting the BSOD............

This is really screwed up.

"Starting Windows
screen totally black

nothing happening.

powered off........powered up......."Windows Failed to start. Insert your Windows installation disk and click start."

Windows start screen, BSOD. Memory management.

Windows failed to start

Windows istallation disc click repair your compluter

or other options which I've done over and over.

I'm tired, and now I'm angry. Time to shut down and come back tomorrow.

See if you can't try to figure it out and get back to me. I'll be looking for your reply later.
I may just have to bite the bullet and call HP Support.

Hello,

I'm questioning a hardware problem with the computer; memory, hard drive, or something else. I know that the HP diagnostics passed but I'm still suspicious.

If you are willing to do more extensive diagnostics, then create an Ultimate Boot CD as follows:

Please download the Ultimate Boot CD (UBCD) from here or here (359 MB Iso file). Burn the ubcdxxx.iso file to create a bootable CD.

  • Don't know how or can't burn an "Iso" image?
  • Download ImgBurn from here.
  • Install the software then start ImgBurn.
  • Select "Write Image file to disk" then under "Source" click on the "folder icon" Posted Image to the right and select the "iso" file location.
  • Click on this icon to "Start." Posted Image
Insert the UBCD and set the HP computer to boot from the CDROM first, usually by pressing the F9 key for the Boot Menu. Select CDROM.

  • Arrow down and select Memory from UBCD start-up menu.
  • Select Memtest86+ V4.20.
  • The program will auto start. Allow it to run for 12 hours (overnight) for moderate confidence or until it registers any errors.
  • There should be NO errors reported.
  • The test can be stopped as soon as an error is reported (in red). Press the ESC key to reboot.
  • To isolate the problem module should you have more than one memory chip, test each chip, one at a time, in the slot closest to the CPU. Take precautions to avoid static electricity when handling sensative electronic components.
  • If a memory chip tests bad, then retest that chip in a different memory slot.
  • Remember, any errors can mean a bad memory stick or bad memory slot on the motherboard.
  • Press the ESC key to stop the test and reboot.

Regards,
Brooks

I'll probably do that tonight, around 8 so that I'll be able to see what's what tomorrow morning. I burned the UBC ok. I did not open it before burning it. Should I have done that?

As long as the UBCD boots up to a startup menu, you're good to go.

Ok.......burned the file using Nero Express to a cd-r. Stuck it in the laptop, hit f9, chose cd/rom...........and nothing. Back to a windows startup screen....

no 'select memtest86', nothing.....no options......nothing.

Back to the windows startup screen, watched it automatically start windows, then a quick flash of BSOD, then continuous start screen/BSOD endlessly recycling.

-------------------------
Did I not burn the file right? Did I burn the whole file? Should I try the whole thing over?

I just checked the 'download' file on my desktop, and it shows I did download the 359MB iso file, so it's on the cd/rom. It's simply not running after I click 'choose cd/rom'
----------------------------
To tell you the truth, it's worse now than when I started on Sunday night. Now I can't even get to the welcome screen.

Hi,

You probably burned the iso as you would a data file. It's not bootable. See here: http://www.ehow.com/how_6453276_burn-iso-using-nero-express.html.

If that doesn't work, try ImgBurn.

Regards,
Brooks

Ok....downloaded ImgBurn. I'll try that later......I'm not going to be able to spend a lot of time on this today, and we're baby sitting.

Question: When I downloaded the ultimate boot cd, I saved it to my download file, and burned it from there. Should I have saved it to my desktop? If I don't burn it as a data file, what DO I burn it as?

Hello,

No, it doesn't matter where you saved the file.

If using ImgBurn, follow the instructions here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic465746.html/page__view__findpost__p__2812987.
Don't know how or can't burn an "Iso" image?.

Regards,
Brooks

Ok.......then the file I burned from Nero should've been ok. Anyhow, I'll burn it from IMGBurn and see if that made a difference.

-----------------------------------------

Ahhhhhhhh, now I see. The ImgBurn was what I should have done in the first place. I'll give it a go again tonight.
