Have begun the restore from media. I made it to the HP Recovery Manager. We'll see where that takes us.

-------------------------------------------

Disks 1 & 2 worked fine. I inserted disk 3, and HP Recovery Manager window remains black with "insert recovery disk 3" still showing. Five minutes have passed, with nothing happening. Ejected and reinserted............still no go. I'm sure this is the proper disk, but will try another just to see if somehow I switched them by accident. Each is in its own case, clearly marked on the outside, but perhaps I somehow got the order screwed up. If that doesn't work, I don't know what to do.

-----------------------------------------

Ok............that didn't work. The Recovery manager seems to have stopped working. I'll start from scratch and see what happens.

---------------------------------------
Oh boy..........I shut down, and now when I restart I get "bootmgr is missing. Press cont/alt/delete to restart. When I do that, the same thing happens over and over.

-------------------------------------------

Hit F11 and got a BSOD. I'm afraid I've really screwed the pooch here.

Tried F11 and got a BSOD................I've really screwed this thing up.

Apparantly I've removed the boot manager......I start > F9 > cd/rom > "boot manager is missing. key c/a/d to restart....

tomcatlover,

The "bootmgr is missing" is because it never completed the recovery.

We know that the memory is good. The hard drive passed the HP internal test, but we haven't been able to run any other hard drive testing program. Attempts to recover the system have failed using both the hidden recovery partition and the previously made recovery DVDs. It may have a motherboard problem.

Unless others have additional suggestions, it might be time to seek out a local computer repair shop or try contacting HP directly.

Regards,
Brooks

Well......my hamfisted attempts probably didn't help, either. I'll contact HP support. They got me up and running again the last time this happened ( a similar problem yet different symptoms). Thanks for all you did. I'm saving this thread because I did learn from it.

Will do. I probably won't be able to get to it until next week, as my weekend is booked solid. I expect a lengthy phone call with HP's tech support. Hopefully they will be able to get going again.
