Sorry bamashooter,

The command should be chkdsk C: /r

Sorry for the mistake

No problem. I googled and found I could do this through C: / properties / tools / blah, blah, blah. I'm doing the full blown version which will take hours at the rate it's going. I'm currently on my older xp laptop. If nothing else, I'm learning some things here thanks to you two folks and becoming a bit less intimidated (yet cautious) with all this. Learning is a good thing. Truly appreciate your patience and generosity.

Last night after doing the work ya'll had me do and today there have been no lock ups. Today, I've been on that computer for about 2 hours off and on. It's been running that check disk for the past 2 hours?? or so and is sitting at 52% complete however I don't really know if it will begin another step after that completion. I'm wanting to do that next step (can't recall it /urgh) afterward.

You bet. HP Pavilion dv7-4285dx /// 00196-135-321-606 or x16-96072 or 584037-001 Hope it's one of those 3 numbers from the barcode sticker. Nothing states "product" number. There is a very, very long Product Key number: BGQQG-YYHV2-F2HQW-BBMDR-BHBKP Now nearing 90% complete. Found another number from my tigerdirect softcopy receipt: M975-173408

Reckon I'll need to wait for x minutes to access it internally (so to speak. No other stickers. It's now approaching 96%. Shouldn't be too much longer.

Just sent you the product number, opened the speedfan link and the computer locked up. Can't even minimize Firefox which normally I can do under lockup conditions. After the system started up again after the check, the increase in fan was noted. This continued until seconds before lockup. Fan was fine during duration of chkdsk.

Malwarebytes launched after about 5 minutes. When it launched, fan speed increased for about 15 seconds and then settled down. I clicked on malwarebytes only to see if it would open.

Speedfan is now downloaded, on my desktop and awaiting launching. Went ahead and launched it. Don't know a thing about it. It ran through a detection step and now appears to be monitoring 5 temps. Two have green check marks and three have flames. Temp symbols are fluctuating a bit. Let me know if you want me to do something with that tool.

Right now the computer (in a forum I belong to) is flying the way it did before the issues started.

Hello once again bamashooter,

In SpeedFan, on the Reading Tab, the green and flame symbols are all dependent on the temperatures configured. The configured temperatures are just best guesses provide by the SpeedFan program developer. Don't let the flame symbols alarm you. The real trick is find out what your system temperature should be.

First we just want to see the CPU temperature at first. You have a Intel Core i5-460M Processor, and according to the Intel web site the T junction is 105 degrees Celsius. I found that at this link. Link to Intel CPU Information

Additionally, I found a HP Pavilion dv7 Entertainment PC Maintenance and Service Guide at this link HP Pavilion dv7 Entertainment PC Maintenance and Service Guide the manual contains some operating temperature data for the laptop case and hard drive as well.

So, what CPU temperature does Speed Fan give you?

Right now the computer (in a forum I belong to) is flying the way it did before the issues started.

Could you explain a little more, do not understand.

Hope this is helping.

I just meant the computer was working at the high rate of speed as it did initially. I can't interpret the various temperature selections. Here you go.

HDO ......... 39C

Temp1 ....... 55C

GPU ......... 53C

Core 0 ...... 47C

Core 1 ...... 48C
