17 October - Is it safe to install 2004 now ?

NO!  With the hope MS cared enough to actually fix things, I gave it another shot.  Updated to 2004, and all drive mapings were toast.  Found that SMB services were not running, started them, reboot, no help.

In a MS site, found a powershell command to start SMBv2, which ran without error, but didn't fix anything.

net use mappings failed, taking a minute after entering the command.

Rolled back to previous version, and my drive mappings magically started working again.

This is ridiculous I have been using drive mappings for decades, through many versions of Windows, but now MS decides to break that?

I delayed 1909 so long that Microsoft got fed up and automatically installed it - I had to just sit and watch with great anxiety and hope. Presumably the same will happen to 2004.

I fear that day is coming for 2004 also.  Guess I'm going to keep updates paused, until mommy dearest decides they won't allow that either.

BC member jenae posted that a person cannot upgrade to v2009 from a version previous to 2004. 2004 must be installed before upgrading to 2009. I don't have many programs to install so I do a clean install of Windows after doing a drive image just in case things go south. Welcome to Windows 10 as a service. A family member got fed up with all these forced feature updates and bloat like Xbox and Mixed Reality.  They toasted Windows and installed a linux distro.

1.25 billion users cannot be wrong and only justifies the popularity and reliability of MS Windows. Updates are essential - forced or not - like it or not.

Isn't it ironic Microsoft had to put a block on their own Surface devices. Their QA could find the problem before they released the update?

With the astronomic complexities of computers and associated sub-systems, even Microsoft are not infallible IMO they do a splendid job..

But this was their own hardware. It didn't help when Microsoft laid off most of their QA testers and put the responsibility on the programmers and insiders.

If I don't reply right away it's because I'm waiting for Windows 10 to Update.

that is because microsoft KNOWS what is best for your computer, you obviously do not,

updates are installed for your own safety and security,

there is no reason to have anxiety over it

OK,

Here's a strange one:

My Lenovo Laptop is running (via Winver) Version 1909 (OS Build 18363.1139), and I have now been offered (via Update & Security - off it's own bat, not me searching) "Feature update to Windows 10 version 20H2".

I have not tried to Install it, but surely this contradicts what jenae has said in the post quoted?

EDIT: Previous to today, the feature update 2004 was being offered to me, but this has now been replaced with the offer of 20H2

Very Strange....

My HP is at the same build level, but I'm still offered 2004 when I check for updates.
