My update notification says that this version is ready for me to download and install NOW.

Is it OK to do so, or is this version not yet fully debugged ?

I have no wish to wreck my system installing this version too early.

I would do it,

if your paranoid create a restore point before doing so....that way you can easily revert if you want to

Hi, Beaker77!

And, even better, you should create a disk image backup and a system repair disk or USB recovery drive as described in these articles:

How to create an image backup in Windows 10 and restore it, if need be

How to Create a System Repair Disc in Windows 10

How to create a Windows 10 recovery USB drive

This is the ultimate method to revert your system back to the previous major version of Windows 10, if need be.

Good luck! :)

Regards,

I, too, would allow the Feature Update to apply.   Thus far, there have been no reports of the kind of disasters that occurred with the rollout of the 1809.

But, a restore point isn't going to help one bit here.   A Feature Update amounts to a complete reinstall of Windows 10, and one cannot use a restore point to roll it back.  That's the entire reason for the built-in option under Settings, Update & Security, Recovery Pane - Go back to the previous version of Windows 10 exists and the Windows.old file is created as part of the update process.

I personally prefer the method recommended by midimusicman79.  Anyone with a computer in this day and age who cares about their data (and time and effort) should have an external backup drive and be taking full system images at least once per month (tossing older ones along the way).   This is the best insurance against failures of any sort, including hardware failures.

Conceivably yes, if it's sufficiently large.   But no one I know, including myself, would ever recommend flash media for keeping full system image backups.  It is too subject to both loss (as in losing it) and device failure.

It's also next to impossible to get one large enough to keep at least 2 full system image backups from most typical computers these days, and you always want your most recent and the one taken just before that one if that option exists storage space-wise.

There's a reason that external USB HDDs are still sold as the primary backup devices.

I've hopped onto 1903 on day one, everything seems to be fine so far. I would say go for it!

Though like what the others have said you should keep a backup of your system incase things go haywire

I just installed the 1903 version update without problems although expect it to take some time because it appears to be a major update.

The standard advice, from every subject matter expert I know, is to accept Feature Updates when offered by Windows Update, but do not force them by manual installation before that time unless you have a need for one of the new features (which, in the vast majority of cases, one doesn't).

So far this Feature Update has been like most of them prior to 1809, mostly without any issues.   You're always going to have some machines that have problems when millions of machines are involved.  But if your own hasn't in the past, there's no reason to believe it is likely to as time marches on.

It could take anywhere from 10 minutes to 2 or 3 hours depending on your internet speed and hardware configuration. But figure for sure 10 minutes at the minimum and maybe 4 hours at the most.

Not really, or at least not specifically.

The download is about 3.8GB, and the amount of time that takes is directly dependent on your connection speed and the load on the Microsoft servers at any given moment in time.  This takes up the majority of the update time, and you can keep working while it's in progress, too.

I believe the install on my machine, which has a conventional HDD, was around 45 minutes or so.

So much depends on the machine's processing power, what's installed that Windows has to preserve, and a wide variety of other factors to give any kind of accurate guesstimate for any random machine.

I generally tell people to apply before going to bed for the evening.

If Windows Update is telling you it's ready to be applied, the base material to do the update is already downloaded to your machine.

Like I said earlier, whether it's bedtime or not, it's best to do these updates when you will not be needing the machine in short order.

Thank you Brian for all your valuable comments. It does say to select  "Download and install now".

I will do it tonight before I retire to bed.
