Good news everyone! Problem solved. Ready to give up with trying to reinstall Windows XP, I installed Ubuntu. It ran too slowly. Without uninstalling Ubuntu I just fed in all 8 of the HP Windows XP recovery disks and...behold!...Windows XP is now running perfectly on my old computer. Ubuntu must have automatically corrected the problem which prevented me from reinstalling Windows XP. There appears to be no visible sign of Ubuntu on my computer. As far as I can see Windows XP appears to have purged it completely.

I reistalled service pack 1. I was unable to reinstall service pack 2. No luck installing service pack 3. No problem though. I just installed service pack 4. I reinstalled all my anti*.* software and all is well.

Thanks to everyone who helped, particularly Agouti, JohnC_21, Leurgy, hamluis, and pcpunk.

There is no service pack 4 for XP...but as long as your system works to your satisfaction, go with it.

It's actually an unofficial release with a roll-up of post SP3 updates.

@delut, good for you!  Linux fixes everything lol.  Ubuntu, at least the Main Ubuntu OS is not good for this type of pc, I think.  Ubuntu is quite a Heavy OS.  Ubuntu makes lighter Operating systems for older hardware that should fly, even faster than XP.  Also does other Linux OS's provide light weight OS's they call distro's.  The nice thing is - as you might already know - you can just Testdrive them without install.  They won't be as fast this way but let's you find out which one you like.  As you also might know, it is way faster installing Linux, especially the lightweight versions, they have less software etc. that allow faster downloads and installs.  Perfect for old XP machines!  Oh, and if the drive is big enough, you can dual boot with XP!

good day, pcpunk

If I don't reply right away it's because I'm waiting for Windows 10 to Update.
