There is still some sugar cane grown in California and quite a bit grown in Hawaii and it seems that it would not be that difficult to increase those crops to cover the shortfall. To be honest, I have no idea how much is imported vs. domestic.
What if you had to send a major appendage (arm, leg, etc.) to the "shop" for a day or so every couple of years?
