Hi,

Regarding the items that showed up in in my menu list after typing cmd in search bar of the menu after clicking on the Start orb

"CMD - SDK.rtf ---this may or may not be something I put ( I'll check it out )
asr cmd
asr cmd alerter ----this only really concerns me"

CMD _SDK.rtf - Yes, this was me,I put a note in my explorer files to remind myself to research what these items were and why they were suddenly showing up when I typed cmd after clicking on my Start orb

asr cmd - I've never seen this before

asr cmd alerter - I've never seen this before

Are these suspicious? If you know what these are, that'd be great - otherwise I'll add them to my ever growing list I refer to as 'Whaaaaat?'

Thank you.

When you make a search Windows will list everything related to the key words you use.  If you look at the image you posted in the dropbox you will see the black box with C:\. inside it at the top of the list, this is the one that you want to right click on and select run as administrator.

If you find something that you don't understand, like the items you put on your whaaaaat? list... google it.

Thanks, I think I'm understanding correctly - I have typed cmd in the Search box many times in the past, up until yesterday, I had never seen:

asr cmd    or
asr cmd alerter

listed before.

I googled asr cmd and asr cmd alerter - is this something that sends an alert somewhere when some hardware fails? Is it installed by a user? I did not install this. I read some reference to Apple products, I don't have any Apple devices & I don't use iTunes. Am I correct or way off?

Getting back to my computer & it's odd behavior, what do we do next? Also, looking at my Speccy results, I have questions about some of the things listed. Is there anything there that looks unusual?

I want to thank you for helping me & clarifying some things.

By the way, the only way I can get to Dropbox is to go to their website. The program won't run from my Desktop. When I go to Explorer, I can't open & run the program from there either. Is that how it should be? When I went to Dropbox website from my browser today, I was already signed in. The same thing happened with My Yahoo & my Yahoo email account. I know I signed off before shutting down last night ( actually it was early this am), but when I opened my FF browser today, I was signed into Yahoo and Yahoo mail in addition to Dropbox. Does that seem odd?

I have websites that I frequent which logs me in automatically, so I don't find this unusual.  If this was happening with a financial institution that would be a different matter.

You have 46 post in this topic now.  We need to stay focused on repairing this computer.  You keep adding insignificant information and question that are dragging out this repair.  I'm going to need to go back and reread this topic to remember just what our original problem was.

The original problem was that the computer was reporting that your copy of Windows was not a legal copy.

Open the Start menu and right click on Computer, then select Properties.

When System opens look down toward the bottom of the page to see Windows activation to see if your copy of Windows is activated.  Post the results.

hi dc3,

Is this what you need?

It says Windows is Activated & a Product ID number.  I can't post a snapshot of the page.

You don't need to post a image of this.  All I needed was to know that it is activated.

Open the Start Menu and type rsop.msc in the Run box.

rsop.msc will appear above the search box, right click on it and select Run as administrator.

When the Resultant Set of Policy opens double click on Computer Configuration in the left pane.

Click on Windows Settings, then double click on Security Settings in the right pane.

Double click on System Services in the right pane.

In the column titled Permission search through the list for a Service which is missing the Not Disabled status.  Right click on this Service, select Properties.

Click on the Precedence tab, then click on the radio button Disabled.  Click on Apply, then  OK.

Type gpupdate /force in the Search box, right click on it when it appears above the Search box and select Run as administrator.

Restart your computer.

I closed all windows, at Start Menu I typed rsop.mse in the box - I got 'No Search results' I did this several times, same result. 'No Search results'.

What do I do now?

If you typed rsop.mse there is your problem.  It should be     rsop.msc

Ok, I tried again, this time typing correctly, at Start Menu I typed rsop.msc  in the box - rsop.msc  did not show up in the list, just an .htm

Then I tried this:

I right clicked on Run from my Start Menu, got a dialog box & typed in rsop.msc, the Administrator Shield was visible under the box & said that program would run as administrator. I clicked ok  and got this error:

Windows cannot find 'rsop.msc'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.  ( Sorry, now I can't get the bold print to turn off. )

If I could get a screenshot to you I would or do 'copy & paste'  I'd do that but I can't get either of them to work.

I have been trying to use Dropbox, but I don't know how. Some of it looks pretty self explanatory but I don't understand how to send something to just you/Bleeping Computer  I think I was able to send something to you once but I can't remember how I did it ( or if I even got it to work). I can't even get to Dropbox without typing "dropbox.com" in my browser. (Remember I said earlier that it looked like there were already some files that made reference to 'Dropbox' in Explorer, even before I downloaded it?. Are you noticing a pattern with my computer - that it doesn't behave as it should? ( I know that last time it was my fault for typing in mse instead of msc.

This is so frustrating. What can I do? I have to leave the house for about 15 minutes, but as soon as I get back, I'll continue trying to find  & run rsop.msc.

Thanks cd3 (Oh look, bold print won't turn off again)

When you type rsop.msc in the search box you will see Programs1 with rsop.msc below it with a icon that resembles a scroll.  Right click on this and select Run as administrator.  This should open the Resultant Set of Policy.  Are you at least getting to this point?

Forget about the dropbox, you don't need it to do what I've requested.
