Did you see if the optical drive was the first boot device in BIOS?

Use Rufus with the iso file to create a bootable USB. The computer is so old, it may not be able to boot from a USB flash drive.

Okay, see if there is anything related to USB HDD as a boot option. You may not be able to boot to a USB

Edit: Did you burn a DVD or a CD. Your computer may be old enough where the optical drive cannot burn DVD's

Sorry, I could not help. You may want to save the hard drive. If your friend gave it to you after it failing, it may still have personal info on it.

Edit: I would replace the CMOS battery if it is easy to get at. A bad battery may be causing this boot problem. If it is a CR2032 it should be an easy replacement

See my edited post. The CMOS battery may need replacing. I can link to the service manual if you want.

Edit: Here it is if you want it.
