It is an OEM version of XP but there is no additional software included.  I bought it as an OEM from an online vendor.  It is not a Dell or HP or Gateway CD that includes a software package.  It is a bare bones XP SP2 CD that I slip-streamed SP3 onto.

It was also a fresh installation onto a formatted drive.

avast! real-time shield modules have changed slightly with new program version releases. Currently, there is no user manual available which explains the shields in avast! 2014.

avast! 8.0 User Guide <- see page 10-11 for More about the real-time shields

Still need assistance with being unable to boot into Windows when Avast is installed on XP.

No solution (yet).  I don't have the system to play around with.  I simply uninstalled Avast on my Father's system since I want it to be able to boot up for him.

On my own XP machine I am running without antivirus as well.  I am not going to test Avast on my own system if it means that I may potentially be unable to boot up as well.  Also running XP SP3.

Then you may want to consider using BitDefender Antivirus Free Edition instead.

Actually I was reading up on it today because it was recommended on another forum I frequent.

Then I learned that it has virtually no settings for advanced users.  That's a big negative for me.

There a Pros and Cons with all anti-virus products. May be time to consider something other than free.

If only Microsoft Security Essentials was not already bugging me about Windows end of service date, I would continue using MSE until July 2015.

Although it isn't very good, I never had a virus slip by during the years that I have used it.

The MSE message is another avenue for Microsoft to get the XP End of Support message out.

I suspect some disgruntled programmer who uses XP will devise a workaround to disable MSE's nag.

I wonder if the warning will go away after April 8th....

Probably not, though.  It will probably stay that orange color that it does when you are partially protected or whatever they call it.

Well I installed Avast on my personal computer with XP SP3 and only installed the file protection service.  It is working fine.  I updated my laptop as well.  a very minimal installation.

I will have more time to play around with my Father's XP SP3 system to find out why Avast prevents it from booting up.

Good luck. I still have been searching the avast forums but so far have not found anything useful.

I am wondering.  I had Microsoft Security Essentials and Avira installed very briefly on my Father's system.

I ran both of their respective uninstallers and registry cleaning things.  But I did not run them in safe-mode.  Maybe I will give those registry cleaning applications a chance to work in safe-mode and then add file protection to the Avast installation and go from there.
