Hi Villanelle,

I have exactly the same problem...  Have you tried to use your email account in a different chrome profile? I have two profiles, and this problem appears only in one of them. Unfortunately I can not remove this AVG Nation search from that one :( So please let me know if you find a solution. thx

Hey Dajuha,

I hope we can find a solution. I have been reading up on it and some posts say it can be really destructive to your computer and as it really screwing with my computer's performance.

I will try the chrome profile thing, but hopefully we can find a solution. Last time I posted here, Gringo helped me and he was really amazing. I have posted my registries for two people and I'm waiting for a response.

Welcome to BC dajuha

If you have an issue or problem you would like to discuss, please start your own topic. Doing that will help to avoid the confusion that often occurs when trying to help two or more members at the same time in the same thread. Even if your problem is similar to the original poster's problem, the solution could be different based on the kind of hardware, software, system requirements, etc. you are using and the presence of other malware. Further, posting for assistance in someone else's topic is not considered proper forum etiquette.

Thanks for your cooperation.

villanelle we were cross posting a lot last night as we were going back and forth in real-time. I just wanted to make sure we were covering all the bases so some of my suggestions may have been things you already tried.

After running Malwarebytes and AdwCleaner are you still getting avg nation on your home page and another tab?

Hi Quietman7!

Yes, it was some crazy hour in the night/morning in Europe. :)

I think it is in a different tab, as both pages open simultaneously. My google homepage and a separate avg nation tab. But, the nation tab is always the tab the furtherest to the left.

Please download and scan with Emsisoft 1 minute Cloud MalAware Scanner.

This is a fast cloud based scanner used to provide an indication of whether your computer is infected with malware. If Emsisoft MalAware detects that your system is infected, you can download and install the full Emsisoft Anti-Malware 30 day trial version, run a thorough scan and remove what was detected.

If you do not want to download the 30 day trial version, you can try performing a scan with Emsisoft Web Malware Scanner.
Vista/Windows 7/8 users need to run Internet Explorer as Administrator.
To do this, right-click on the Internet Explorer icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run As Administrator from the context menu.

Important Note: This scanner is based on ActiveX technology and only supports Internet Explorer with ActiveX enabled to run correctly. However, it contains all scanner features of Emsisoft Anti-Malware to include cleaning and quarantine.

I downloaded it and ran the quick scan, but nothing came up.

I have uninstalled AVG and all related files, how can I get rid of this?

Thank you.

Although it uses AVG in its name and bundles AVG Secure Search, the Nation Toolbar is not actually related to AVG.

How To Disable AVG Secure Search Provider In Browsers
How To Disable AVG Search From New Tab
Run the AVG Browser Configuration Tool

Some of this may be redundant but lets double-check each of these removal suggestions for anything related to AVG:
1. Go to Wrench > Settings > Under "Search," click "Manage search engines" and delete AVG Secure Search. Then change your default search engine back to "Google" or another search engine.
2. Go to Wrench > Tools > Extensions. Remove the "AVG Internet Security" extension
3. If you have a homepage button next to your address bar, go to Wrench > Settings. Under "Appearance," click on "Change" (under the Show Home Buttom) and enter the homepage URL address you want.

Close and reopen Chrome. Go to google.com <- IMPORTANT: Be sure you are not on the AVG search page when you do this:
1. Go to Wrench > Settings to open the "Settings" section in a new tab.
2. Under the main heading of Settings, there are sub-headings...look for the one called "On Startup".
3. Below this there are three choices. The bottom one (Open a specific page) should be selected.
4. Next to this click the link for "Set pages" to open "Startup pages".
5. You should see the AVG startup page. Highlight it with your mouse and click the X to the right to delete it.
6. After deleting the AVG startup page, set a new start page.
7. Click OK to return to the Settings section and make sure the new start page is still showing.
8. Close and reopen Chrome for all the new settings to take affect.

If doing all the above still fails to remove AVG Secure Search you can try the following suggestion I found at the Google Chrome forums:
1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default
2. Delete the entire "Default" folder. Doing this will delete all your bookmarks (so you may want to back them up first) AND remove all your extensions so they will need to be re-installed afterwards.

Note: The AppData folder is hidden by default so you will have to reconfigure Windows to show hidden files, folders.

The managing the search engine. It's such a relief because I tried searching for a solution before I used bleepincomputer.com and a few sites said that it was basically impossible to get rid of and it can access all the information on your computer, modify all your settings and render your computer useless. Scaremongers! That's why I come to the experts.

Btw, I am studying in a small city in Italy right now and it is very hard to get help for these type of things, so double THANK YOU!

Hi - just wanted to add to the possible solutions.. I completed the first two batch of steps suggested by Quietman7 and it didn't solve the problem. While waiting for my computer to "unhide" the apdata folder I noticed in the lower right of the AVG nation page an option to "restore default new tab page" or something like that. I clicked it, and it worked! I still suggest cleaning up your settings as Quietman7 suggests but this final step solved the problem in my case.  Good luck and thanks for the help!
