KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR BSODs

Hello again... I'm back... unfortunately. A few weeks ago I was on here about some BSODs. I was getting them frequently; it was out of control. At first I thought it was some malware, which it seemed to be, because after I scanned and removed it all, the BSODs appeared to stop.

But now they're back (actually, they've always been there), but they're happening much less frequently now. All of the latest BSODs have been KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR ones, but a few of the older ones were different. From doing a bit of Google searching, the KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR seems to be related to hardware - hard drives, more specifically. Since this hard drive is not the one that came with the laptop, I thought it may very well be the hard drive.

It's a Seagate Momentus 750GB 2.5in SATA, which I bought in August of last year (a few months before the prices of HDDs skyrocketed). It is still in warranty, but...

It passes both the short and long SeaTools tests. Both tests were ran on the Windows versions of Seatools, but I ran the DOS version again later and did the short test. It passed, again.

I will paste my latest recorded bluescreenview log, but it is important to note that it is definitely NOT the latest BSOD I've gotten, as lately Windows doesn't feel like dumping the logs, or at least they are not showing up in bluescreenview.

I don't see how this could be a software problem as I have never gotten BSODs in Win7 (besides the extremely rare one here and there) before I swapped hard drives. These BSODs have only started happening since the beginning of February.

Make sure that all your drivers are updated, and please update to SP1 for Windows 7.

All drivers are updated. Attempting to update to SP1 fails with the error code 8024200D.

Let's see what the situation is like after doing that.

Before I add the log, I have a few fun finds I should probably share:

After uninstalling daemon tools and using the sptd installer to remove sptd.sys, I rebooted the computer. After the inital HP boot screen it said "Boot device not found: Hard Drive. Please install an OS onto the hard drive.

I rebooted again and it was fine. This has happened before when coming from hibernate.

Now about memory: I ran memtest86 overnight and into today (while I was at school) and before I left I checked it, it was at 10 passes with no errors, but after I came home the computer was turned off. What could this mean...?

And if it makes ANY difference, this laptop is a dual-boot with Linux Mint 12. (Memtest86 is included in the GRUB menu)

EDIT: These questions are related to the bluescreen (because kernel_data_inpage_error apparently usually means hardware issues). I'm not just adding these problems in there... like another topic, if you know what I mean.

That should not normally happen.

• Did someone switch off the computer?
• Did the mains power falter at some time during the day?

The SPTD installer will not allow me to choose uninstall. It does not detect any version of it on the computer.

And yes, the power did go out for a very short amount of time here, but why wouldn't it use battery power???
Nobody would have turned it off because the laptop is in my room and the laptop was closed.

Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\sptd.sys and rename sptd.sys to sptd.OLD (if you can?).

Restart and check with SystemLook.

Good: It seems you have effectively "got rid of" sptd.sys so that cannot be responsible for any further issues that you have.

Now, do you still have a BSOD problem???

Were you able to follow up on LL's link to fix the Windows Update problem and to get SP1 successfully installed, and all the latest updates from Windows.

The fact that you are getting this message "After the inital HP boot screen it said "Boot device not found: Hard Drive. Please install an OS onto the hard drive."" is a concern. No, from the testing you have reported so far, the hard drive is not the problem. Is the computer (Windows system) possibly infected with malware? Have you seen any indication at all of infection, or have you had to deal with an infection on the Windows system at some time?

It takes quite a while of uptime before I get a BSOD. I will wait and see.

And malware? You should check out my previous post for more info on that. It was infected, but I have since cleaned it of viruses, so I will just wait and see if I get any more BSODs.
