DD
Have you not heard of a 'tongue in cheek' comment?
Yes, I honestly used it, and got into all sorts of Problems, Mate.
BC and another Forum made me see that that is not the way.

A lot of my clients systems are old and for one reason or another Microsoft will not Validate them or even allow SP3 to installed. So, they will use XP SP2 until they crash completely.

Ever think that it wont validate due to hardware issues such as BIOS updates and Driver conflicts?
You do know that Microsoft always recommends to make sure everything is updated on your computer before applying any service packs and the updates include but are not limited to the following:
BIOS Updates (Had an issue going from Non SP XP Pro to SP1 where I would BSOD until I flashed my BIOS)
Driver Updates such as Video, Audio, Chipset, Network, and others
Software Patches such as Office Updates, Virus Scanner Updates, DirectX Updates, Internet Explorer Updates, CD Burning Software, and what not.
Virus or other Malware Infections can prevent any service pack updates to fail.
Using a non-genuine Windows Product Key can also lead to service pack installs and other updates.
If your clients machines are old and slow, then maybe its time to perform some upgrades such as RAM and Hard Drive upgrades.

Most of the issues were with the cheaper Dells and HPs. Dell and HP fail to provide needed updates for some of the third party hardware and software they pre-install on these systems.
