I had an old version of ZoneAlarm on my Windows 10 Pro 64 bit computer.  I recently uninstalled it.

But it seems like the uninstaller sucked and Check Point services are still invading my machine.  There is no way to uninstall them in Setup since they are not listed as associated with any program on the apps list to uninstall.

I am concerned because it seems like major surgery will be the only way to get rid of these.  Apparently a "cleanup" app they once made is no longer recommended and they don't have one that will work without possibly messing your system up.

And manual removal seems like major surgery.

One thing is for sure I will never use ZA again.  I cannot stand programs with uninstallers that leave this garbage behind and this is one of the worst I have ever seen.

I get why they made these services nuclear blast proof, but to leave them on the system after an install is just plain evil.

Tried just disabling them all at startup which is not as good as an uninstall, but as you can see from the screenshot some of them still run.

Any way to get rid of these for good without messing up my machine?

Thanks for any help.

Thank you for your response @Cat Herder.  However I am unable to open that link. (Update, I was able to open it by copying and pasting the link)  I'll take a look.  Thank you.

Ironically it seems that it is a reference to a Revo Uninstaller log.  I had originally installed that version of Zone Alarm using Revo and had my own log.  I tried to decide whether to use that or use the original uninstaller and sadly I think I chose the wrong one.

However, using a Revo log is risky, especially one that was not used in your precise installation.  So if that is a reference to a log, it might be helpful, but I would have no way of knowing which logged registry entries and/or files would be applicable to my particular installation.

Of course when used the stock uninstaller it also removed it from by Revo list so I no longer have that log.  But I may have a backup of it.

I consider using Revo beyond the stock uninstaller risky though as I have had some bad experiences in the past using the more aggressive options.

It's a good idea, but I am hoping someone may know something less complicated.

I use Geek my self and use right click Force Uninstall with no problems as of yet.

Have purchased Revo before and it gets more than the free and as well Monitors installs if so wish and gets everything.

If you have the installer for Zone Alarm consider reinstalling it or see if it repairs your install then can remove it.

No risk, no rewards.   Maybe too late for Removal Tool and is 2022    https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/zone_alarm_uninstall.html  from Safe Mode would be best.

OS can be repaired : https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-windows_install-winpc/how-to-perform-a-repair-upgrade-using-the-windows/35160fbe-9352-4e70-9887-f40096ec3085/

So you had CheckPoint installed and added ZoneAlarm  ??

EDIT : ahhh ZoneAlarm purchased to distribute CheckPoint.

Other than that you would need I think open a Topic in the Malware Removal Forum and then can clean it out with writing a FixList for you but only after doing this :

I had an old version of ZoneAlarm ...........I recently uninstalled it...................Check Point services are still invading my machine.

Did you also uninstall the "Endpoint Security client" because it's that that's responsible for those services? You should be able to uninstall it via Control Panel/Windows Settings or the Check Point folder under the Start menu.

@Pkshadow

First sorry for calling you the wrong screen name in my last post!

And thanks for some more good ideas that I'll consider.

Unfortunately I do not have the original installer for the version of ZA that I installed several years ago and don't know what version it was.  Otherwise I would indeed try reinstalling it.  I am assuming that the Check Point services that are infesting my setup now were installed when I installed ZA as I did not install them separately.

I want to be very careful about this because I don't have time for downtime for the next few months at least and while it's annoying to have these processes running, the PC still works great in spite.  Also, these leftover processes are specifically designed to be hard to defeat and don't operate like normal processes.  So I want to be very careful not to screw things up until I have a lot of confidence in what I am doing.

When I updated my PC to the final (free) update to Win 10 a few days ago I had an issue.  The lag time for starting and shutting down, opening and closing programs, some browser related things and some other things was enormous.  Everything was running really slow.  I identified Zone Alarm as the problem and after I uninstalled it, the problem was fixed... except that these processes remained.

Anyway, some good ideas there and I will give them some thought.  Thanks again!

=====

@Secret-Squirrel

Thank you for the idea.  I wish I could do that, but there is no icon or listing for "Endpoint Security client" or anything related to these processes in either Control Panel/Windows Settings or on the Start menu.  There is no folder in the start menu for Check Point or anything related.  It was not installed as a separate program, it was installed when installing Zone Alarm.

So I am not able to uninstall it using that method.

====

I also searched the Check Point program folders for things that look like uninstaller files.

I did find one: C:\Program Files (x86)\CheckPoint\Endpoint Security\TPCommon\Cipolla\uninst.exe

I believe one of the processes was called "Cipolla" so MAYBE this uninstalls that one.  I am tempted to run it, but I don't like doing things when I don't know exactly what I am doing so for now I am leaving it alone.  Not sure what to do with this.

===UPDATE===

I did come across an interesting freeware program called Bulk Crap Uninstaller :crazy: that I am taking a look at though.

Bulk Crap Uninstaller - Remove large amounts of unwanted applications

First look... WOW!  This thing is powerful!

And I immediately found some access to a way of uninstalling at least some of the Check Point stuff if not all.  So I am studying that.  If it works this may be all I need.

This thing is definitely for power users as it warns... so I will proceed slowly.

Not a problem :=} either works.

Seems is part of your issue and will work.

The file C:\Program Files (x86)\CheckPoint\Endpoint Security\TPCommon\Cipolla\uninst.exe is the uninstaller for the Check Point SandBlast Agent (part of the Endpoint Security suite), specifically targeting anti-ransomware components.

So almost a duplicate of your issue and solved by the OP doing the above plus a little more :

https://www.techguy.org/threads/remove-checkpoints-folder-from-pc-after-uninstalling-za.1229114/

A fix list would remove all of those things that are left over.   As to following the above before getting a fix list; it IMHO would be better for removal now than after doing the above.

@Pkshadow

Thanks for that.  Useful idea for my future reference.

I had success with BC Uninstaller!

It was pretty easy to use and had a lot of precautionary features like making registry backups before each uninstall.

I still have these two services appearing on the services list:

Check Point Sandblast Agent Cipolla Service

Check Point Sandblast Agent Updater Service

I didn't see them on the list of things I could remove in BC Uninstaller.  Other Check Point services were on that list and I uninstalled them.

The good news is that the two remaining services are not running.  They are on the services list but disabled and not running.  So I am going to leave them alone at least for now.

As I suspected, shutting down these services made a significant improvement in speed on the PC.  Startup, Shut Down, program launch, program close and everything else is faster.  Zonealarm has been slowing my computer down for years and never even knew it.  So glad to be rid of it.  Just using Windows firewall now.

I didn't notice any problems on the PC ..... EXCEPT... something seems to have wiped out many of my MS Edge settings.  HOWEVER... it was not necessarily related to the uninstall.  I decided to do a cleanup after running that and it's possible that is what did it.  Sometimes you get carried away and go too far.  :(

So I have to reconfigure my Edge which will probably take some serious time.  The hardest part was that ALL of my extensions and their configurations were lost.  So somehow I'm going to have to reconstruct all of that.  And some of the extensions will be hard to find because they were old but I loved them.  Oh well... at least it works and I have already installed my absolutely critical extensions.

Can't figure out what deleted them all but it may have been running CCleaner (although it never did that before and I never changed the settings).

I'll get it all back to normal eventually.

Yes it was Ccleaner, is not recommended.  What has bee recommended by a MS Developer that use to post here : System Ninja it stays away from the Registry.

There is Disk Cleanup on the Start Menu since 1995, run once then run again Click Clean up System Files.
Then there is Open a CMD Prompt as a Admin and then copy/paste : %SystemRoot%\System32\Cmd.exe /c Cleanmgr /sageset:65535 & Cleanmgr /sagerun:65535 this into it and enter. which opens up the above but cleans more, tick all boxes.
See this page for other info : https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/disk-cleanup-in-windows-8a96ff42-5751-39ad-23d6-434b4d5b9a68

As well from Settings--> there is Storage Sense.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/manage-drive-space-with-storage-sense-654f6ada-7bfc-45e5-966b-e24aded96ad5#ID0EBD=Windows_11 /10

Then there is Microsoft PC Manager :  https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9pm860492szd?hl=en-US&gl=CA  Do not need to run at startup and pick what need to.

Then there is from a CMD Admin Prompt : dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbase

This will clean Up the WinSxS folder used by the Windows Update and will generally free up a few GB of space, if it has never been done.  No need to run at all often.  Is for fixing .

So all in all there is a large amount of ways to clean up. Have found none of them as perfect.   MS has time limits on some of these folders before they get emptied. 30days.
