Firstly, Happy Holidays!!

I've been having issues with Word & Excel - sometimes the files will open but other times a box comes up and says "Excel cannot open the file 'blahblah' because the file format or file extension is not valid.  Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file."

So I ran a boot time scan with Avast and error code 42127 came up.

Can someone help me out?  It would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

Dan S.

I had a similar problem with word or libre office not opening an url to go to the internet.

I ran Windows Repair (All In One)https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/windows-repair-all-in-one/" in safe mode, it found numerous file errors.

And fixed the problem.

Info.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.   Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to  website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from ccleanercom (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Post below the Reply box.

You have two antivirus software on your notebook

Avast Antivirus
Antivirus: Enabled

McAfee VirusScan
Antivirus: Enabled

This can cause conflicts with each other
You should uninstall avast antivirus, since its not trusted brand.

I suggest removing all traces of the Avast and McAfee programs...Windows Defender seems to be the AV of choice for Win 10 and there is nothing to suggest that either McAfee or Avast products are superior.

There are only so many things that even address file corruption:

a.  Uninstall/reinstall the offending program, if it's an issue limited to a particular program.

b.  Run the sfc /scannow command to attempt to overcome/negate Windows files corruption.

c.  Check the functional status of the hard drive if the apparent corruption issues are limited to one drive.

d.  Run the chkdsk /r command.

Causes Of File Corruption.

I see nothing in the SMART data for the WDC drive which indicates a problem with the drive.  I cannot assess the other drive because there is no SMART data reflected, no indication that SMART is supported on that drive.

How would I unistall/reinstall Microsoft 365 if I my computer doesn't have a cd drive?  Can I get it online?  I don't even think I have any kind of key for 365 anyway...

Btw, thanks for everyone's help...

You need to create a copy of the software and put it on a thumbdrive and reinstall it.

No you do not need any special software. Download the software and put it on a thumb drive.

BTW: have you removed 1 or both of the AV"s as recommended above.

And why do you have office 2003 and office 365.

MS Office 365 is subscription based software.  If you are a subscriber you can freely download the installer from Microsoft whenever you need to.  It will allow you to install it on a certain number of machnes depending on your subscription package.  If you are not a subscriber what you probably have there is a trial version which will expire if a subscription is not taken up.

I removed both AV's as recommended.  I preferred Office 2003 - but then the issues started - so I switched to Office 365...
