usually a full cycle of battery charging is around 3 to 4 hours and charginf to 80 % in two hours
if the case like you said u charge it for hours then end up with just one hour playing it, you have something wrong
1st thing: if you do have an old ipod ( u used it like more than 300 times charging it) then it is normal you just have to go to apple store or dealer and replacing your battery around 50 $, before that think with your self is it worth a new battery replacement.
2nd thing: if ur ipod is new then contact your dealer to replace it.
