As part of its Grow with Google program, Google has created an IT Support certification program based on the same methods that they use train their own employees. Called the Google IT Support Professional Certificate, this certification aims to prepares people for an entry level job in the information technology support field in 12 months of online study.

The Google IT Support Professional Certificate is a 60 hour video training program on the online training site Coursera that is taken over the length of a year. While this program normally cost $49 a month, Google is also offering financial assistance to 10,000 students in the United States so that everyone can take part in this program.  In order to see if you are eligible for financial assistance, students must apply by February 20th, 2018.

This certification course has been created by Google and includes training by their employees.  According to their announcement the courses include hands-on labs and interactive assessments in order to prepare for real life scenarios:

With over 64 hours of video lessons and a dynamic mix of hands-on labs and other interactive assessments, all developed by Googlers, this certificate program introduces people to troubleshooting and customer service, networking, operating systems, system administration, automation, and security—all the fundamentals of IT support. Throughout the program, people will hear directly from Googlers whose own foundation in IT support served as a jumping-off point for their careers.

The courses included with this program are:

  • Technical Support Fundamentals
  • The Bits and Bytes of Computer Networking
  • Operating Systems and You: Becoming a Power User
  • System Administration and IT Infrastructure Services
  • IT Automation: It’s not that scary!
  • IT Security: Defense against the digital dark arts

Even better, when the course is completed, a student can opt into sharing their information with employers who may be looking for IT Support candidates. This includes companies such as Bank of America, Walmart, Sprint, and Google themselves.

For those looking to get into IT Support and have little hands on experience, an online course like this could allow you to prepare for a new career at your own pace. For those interested in this certification and need financial assistance, I strongly suggest you apply as soon as possible in case the slots become taken.
