After analyzing the deployment state of existing Microsoft Exchange customers, Microsoft has decided to move the end of support date for Exchange Server 2010 to October 13th, 2020.
Microsoft originally planned to end support for Microsoft Exchange 2010 on January 14th 2020, but after seeing how many organizations using Exchange Server 2010 have been slow to migrate to newer versions, they decided to extend support to October 13th, 2020.
"Our commitment to meeting the evolving needs of our customers is as strong as ever, and we recognize discontinuing support for a product that has been as popular and reliable as Exchange Server 2010 can be an adjustment. We also know that some of you are in the midst of upgrades to a newer version of Exchange Server on-premises, or more transformative migrations to the cloud with Office 365 and Exchange Online. With this in mind, we are extending end of support to October 13th 2020 to give Exchange Server 2010 customers more time to complete their migrations. This extension also aligns with the end of support for Office 2010 and SharePoint Server 2010."
For organizations who do not have the time or resources to migrate to Exchange Online or Office 365, Microsoft offers a free Microsoft FastTrack service that offers guidance on migrating away from older versions of Exchange.
While the Exchange end of support has been moved back, administrators need to remember that Exchange Server 2010 runs on top of Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2, which will reach end of support on January 14th , 2020.
Due to this, even though organizations may continue to have support for Exchange Server, they will not be receiving security updates for the underlying operating systems. Due to this, Microsoft recommends making a concerted push to finish their migrations as soon as possible.
