Hi, this is my first post; I'm something of a newb (even though I studied pre-Pentium IBM micro-channel computer repair), and I hope you can help.

Please forgive me, but I purchased an eMachines (AMD Sempron 3100+ legacy) from the local Wal-Mart about a year ago  . This computer came with XP Media Center 2005 sp2 and AOL 9.0 pre-installed. Some time back, I had AOL Computer Checkup, and also AOL Safety & Security Center on my desktop. One day, the computer crashed. I tried several times to run the Checkup and SSC, but I got nothing but a white window on either one. I deleted them both and attempted to reload, but the white windows continued. I deleted them both, and downloaded Spybot S&D 1.4 and AOL Anti Virus Shield (powered by Kapersky).

Every so often, I get a screen with nothing but wallpaper, missing icons, and some shadows from the icon characters. It takes a while for me to even reboot. This also happens if I have to go into IE to remove cookies or delete webpages. WTF's going on?

Is there a trojan or virus on here? Has a system file been corrupted? Will I have to reformat, and lose all the programs and everything on my computer?

MOD EDIT: Moved to appropriate forum, merged 2 seperate topics then merged posts (above and below this note) ~ stevealmighty

Hi ginormous and Welcome to Bleeping Computer.

Lets be optimistic and start here:
Right-click on an empty area of your Desktop/ point to Arrange Icons by/ make a check mark on "Show Desktop Icons".

Then to be on the safe side, download and install SUPERAntiSpyware, allowing it to quarantine whatever it finds.
Run this scan in Safe Mode.

~Edit: Spybot log appears clean.

Chaos reigns within.
Reflect, repent, and reboot.
Order shall return.
