Computer running XP. Got hit with the WinAntiVirusPro 2006 virus. Ran Spybot SD, AdAware, BitDefender, and also have Norton360 running. Spybot found Vmonde virus and some trojans and such. Norton 360 keeps finding VirtuMonde and seems to be getting rid of them, but I'm quite certain it's not completely clean, hence the log.

Your help is greatly appreciated. This has cost me a number of days of work and TONS of mental anguish!

Hello,

The current formatting of your log makes it difficult to read, so in notepad:
On top, click Format >uncheck Word Wrap

Then, I notice from the log that there are running more than one different Anti-Virus programs with Auto-protect enabled. Symantec/Norton and TrendMicro Officescan
Never install more than one Antivirus and Firewall! Rather than giving you extra protection, it will decrease the reliability of it seriously!
The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Also because more than one Antivirus and Firewall installed are not compatible with eachother, it can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown.

So you have to make a decision here and keep the Antivirus you prefer and uninstall the other one.
Then reboot after uninstalling.

I see you have Viewpoint installed...
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
Then reboot.

After reboot, * Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished and after reboot (in case it asks to reboot), combofix will open again to gather the necessary information for the log. This may take a bit. When done, Combofix will close and a log should open, combofix.txt.
Post the contents of this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

OK finally got it all together. I uninstalled one of the Antivirus programs, and also removed ViewPoint from the computer. Rebooted, ran ComboFix, and got the log file. Then followed up with a new HJT scan and get the log.

Word wrap has been unchecked already, and seems to be fine when I look at my post on this end. Just FYI. If you'd like me to attach the log files next time, just let me know.

Here is the Combofix log, followed by the HJT log. Thanks!

Hi,

If you'd like me to attach the log files next time, just let me know.

No, I rather prefer you copy and paste the logs in the thread itself. This because, when some people are having the same issue or some entries in logs are new and people google it, if the logs are attached, google won't find it.

I assume you have been uninstalling Norton? In that case, also uninstall LiveUpdate via software > add/remove programs as it is still present, up and running.

Let's deal with the rest now... You've had some pretty nasty infections present there which also collected valuable info from your system including passwords, so I recommend you change all your passwords afterwards once we are done here and everything is "clean" again.
Don't change them now, because as long malware is present, it will gather the new passwords again.

Do next please..

* Open notepad - don't use any other texteditor than notepad or the script will fail.
Copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into notepad:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wvdsvihu.dll

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{8e063363-64a6-4d4a-ad14-7fb7e8b9ccca}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{938A8A03-A938-4019-B764-03FF8D167D79}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\gb2age]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\gebywwv]

Save this as txtfile CFScript

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

Posted Image

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog.

Extra question... Did you set the policy to have no Welcome screen when you log in into Windows?

To answer your last question, I did not set any policies with respect to any welcome screens - it may have been done prior to my getting the computer (it's a work laptop).

Moving forward, I ran the CFscript in Combofix, and this is the log that resulted. Please note that it did not ask for a reboot, nor did I reboot.

Please also note that the logs above still include the LiveUpdate, since it wasn't uninstalled prior to running the logs.

I have now removed LiveUpdate, just FYI.

Ok, so that part is done as well.

Your logs look clean again.

Navigate to and delete the C:\Qoobox folder

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

Qoobox is gone and Java is updated.

Everything seems to be running great. Computer is as quick as new, and no annoying pop-ups have come into play.

It looks as though Trend Micro picked up another trojan somehow, but apparently successfully quarantined it. I'll keep a vigilant eye out over the next few days to see if something weird starts happening.

My last question to you is the following:

Besides obviously avoiding sites where these viruses have come from (I know exactly when and from where the infection had come), and based on what you see I have running (I also have AdAware and Spybot SD available to me)...

What other items do you recommend that I have running in the background to optimally (I know "completely" is pretty much out of the question) avoid this happening again?

Thanks SO much for your help. I'm sure you understand the frustration that comes about with these infections. Your help is definitely invaluable!

Only bad thing is that I now have to do this same exact thing for my girlfriend's computer, which is hit with the same exact thing as me. So we may actually be talking once again very soon!

Regards,

Al

Hi,

It's normal that Scanners may still find some leftovers.. but now they will be able to delete/quarantine it without any problem.

Besides obviously avoiding sites where these viruses have come from

Well, actually, that's the most important part, because even with the best Antivirus/Software/security in general installed, when you visit these sites, you'll get infected anyway.

Also read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.

You can start a new thread for your Girlfriend, so me or someone else will take a look at it.

And glad I could help

Thanks again!

just FYI, the virus that Trend caught and quarantined was TROJ_CONHOOK.AH.

I will be posting the gf's HJT logs either tonight or tomorrow. Warning to all of the helpers out there -it's most likely a bigger disaster than mine was!

Yes, that's a leftover. Virumundo/Conhook are actually the same family. We removed the active infection, removed related files that I could gather from your logs, so most probably these leftovers were found in your Recycle bin (since you deleted the Qoobox folder where these bad files were quarantines).

Warning to all of the helpers out there -it's most likely a bigger disaster than mine was!

Oh boy
