Posted 25 January 2005 - 12:39 AM

I am currently running a plethera of security programs including: Symantec 8.1 corporate AV, AVG 6.0, Antiy GB4, Spybot S&D, Ad-aware 6, PC Bug doctor, Spyware doctor, Trojan Hunter and Symantec 8.1 corporate firewall.

On any given day one of these may find something that looks like my problem but to my dismay, it seems to rewrite itself. I think C:\windows\blank.htm has something to do with it b/c when I execute the file the same search engine pops up. This search engine is apparently not web based as when the computer is disconnected from the internet and all internet files are deleted, it will still open. Here is my HJT file...I hope someone can help.

Hi Tim,
That log doesn't look too bad--let me check on a couple of things and we'll get started on getting you fixed up.

Awesome. Thanks for your time. When i start IE, it takes on a life of its own. It will initialize on its own, fly around between several websites then shut down or at least disappear. Firefox and SIE dont seem to have the same problem.

OK, please do the following:

Boot your computer into Safe Mode using the F8 method.

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here: How to see hidden files in Windows

Scan again with HijackThis. Put a checkmark by the following entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = C:\WINDOWS\blank.htm

O18 - Filter: text/html - {B72F75B8-93F3-429D-B13E-660B206D897A} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\wnim.dll

O23 - Service: Remote Packet Capture Protocol v.0 (experimental) - Unknown - %ProgramFiles%\WinPcap\rpcapd.exe (file missing)--->WinPcap is most likely part of this infection but could be used for legitimate purposes. If you did not install this yourself fix it.

Close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and then click the "Fix checked" button.

Using My Computer/Windows Explorer, delete the following files and folders. Do not be concerned if they do not exist:

C:\WINDOWS\blank.htm
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wnim.dll
C:\ProgramFiles\WinPcap <--delete this folder only if you chose to remove WinPcap.

Run Disk Cleanup. Type cleanmgr in the run box by going to Start>Run. Have it clean out the following three:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Reboot back into normal mode, scan again with HijackThis and post another log.

You could be overdoing it with all the security apps. Unless you're really good at configuring them so that monitoring/protection components aren't run at the same time, the system instability that you mention could be the result.

But for now let me know how things are running after the HJT fix. And please only post an HJT log.

Ack! I missed an 02. Sorry about that.

Boot into safe mode again and fix these with HijackThis.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B72F75B8-93F3-429D-B13E-660B206D897A} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\wnim.dll (file missing)

Remember to only have HijackThis open when you hit Fix Checked.

It should already be gone, but check the System32 folder again and delete wnim.dll if it's there.

Reboot back into normal mode and post a fresh log.

That should stop that error. Do report any bad behavior.

Well, that's two my bads in a row for me. My apologies again. Guess I'm having a bad night. :flowers:

Yes, use HijackThis again to fix that line:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Systems Restart] Rundll32.exe wnim.dll, DllRegisterServer

You can run HJT in normal mode to fix the line, but be sure and reboot for the change to take effect. Then post one more log and please tell me the error went away.

Perfect. Everything is running smoothly. No sign of infection. You are the man. Thanks for everything. (the error is gone)

I'll confirm that's a clean log, Tim. I have my glasses on tonight. :flowers:

There's something else you should do. Disable System Restore and then re-enable it to purge any malware it may have backed up. See our tutorial for instructions: Windows XP System Restore Guide.

All that security software you're running most of this is probably old news, but please have a look at the following page for our standard recomendations on what to do now that you are clean and how to prevent future infections.

Simple steps to keep your computer secure!

Glad I could help.
