Sorry. I found that my ISP's Router was disabling Anonymous requests.

Thank you for looking at this - if you have the same problem, check your router and your ISP's!!!!

Hello, all. New to this site and forums, but long time geek.

I have a Windows XP SP 2 machine that up to a few weeks ago had no problem getting to Windows Update and installing whatever Bill decided needed to be on it. However, it seems that I cannot do that anymore. Don't know when it happened -

When going to the Windows Update site, it gives me the message that it is using the ActiveX control to determine what version software I am running... and then dying.

PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING REPLIES:

This is (some but not all) what I have done to correct this:

1. Replaced WU files (all 4) with fresh, clean copies and reregistered.
2. Cleared c:\widnows\system32\softwaredistribution folder.
3. Allowed Cryptographic Services, BITS & Automatic Updates services to interact with desktop and start automatically.
4. "Upgraded" to IE7.
5. Removed all proxy configurations.
6. Ensured firewall does not block *any* site (hardware & MS's software firewall).
7. Have checked PC with SpyBot, McAfee, Norton. Removed all and tried again (in case RTF checking was blocking something).

All done, and no dice. Here is the latest from my c:\windows\windowsupdate.log:

Any ideas? If you need any more information, please ask. Thanks.
