I have a Dell Dimension 4100 series with no CD's for reformating
I need to clear off some junk that is causing the computer to freeze up and sending all kinds of unwanted ad popups. A popswatter does not work it just hangs

Welcome to bleepingcomputer.com, sistermt
Re-formatting is typically not needed even when the problems are persistant.
As a prelude to further, more strenous and specific cleaning,
we recommend these steps:
Please follow the prompts carefully and read the help sections in the individual programs, too.
Windows Updates. At least SP1 & critical patches for XP. The latest for all other versions. Also IE and Office Products.
Spybot S&D 1.3 Tea Timer option can be installed,
but be prepared to be notified each time a program seeks to change your registry.
Once you're used to allowing changes when they occur normally,
you'll like having it when an unusual, malware change is shown,
one that you should deny... preventing problems by doing so
Lavasoft Ad-Aware Personal SE 1.05. Choose a location, download & then update.
Plug-ins may also be added after installation & updating.

The spybot program will link you to another in the Immunization part of it.
Javacool's spywareBlaster can be added, also.
I'd recommend doing that.

Let us know how that works, and if you still have a problem,
we can go from there.

Don't panic! Phawgg is quite correct. Most of the time, using a couple of spyware applictions will get rid of a surprising number of things that interfere with your using your computer. BC volunteers will also help with any of these that remain after using the two Phawgg mentioned (see the HijackThis! forum for details.
