Hi gavinblake,

Our apologies for the delay. If you still need help, please post a new log so I can see if anything has changed. If you have not done so already, please do the initial cleanup steps in the following instructions before posting your new log: Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log

A new version of HijackThis has now been released, so before you repost your log please download and install the new version. In order to get some additional information please do this in the following way:

1. Open Add or Remove Programs via Control Panel and uninstall HijackThis 1.99.1
2. Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges and it is best to run DSS from your Desktop.
3. Close all applications and windows.
4. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and OK the disclaimer.
5. When the screen in the image below appears, click Yes and follow the promts to download the new version of HijackThis. Please tell your firewall to allow this download.

Posted Image

Note that a shortcut to HijackThis will appear on your desktop and you can run it from there when asked for a follow up log.

6. DSS will now scan your computer. If you get a warning from your anit-virus, please allow it as the scan is not harmful.
7. When complete, two text files will open - main.txt that will include a HijackThis log<- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
8. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your next reply. If you have any problems with the logs, both can be found in C:\Deckard\System Scanner.

Also please post the entire error message that you get.

The thing about people

is they change

when they walk away.--Mipso

Ewww, gavinblake, you've got quite a mess here. A new(er) version of a bot trojan and signs of many previous infections of info-stealers. Your first course of action is to keep this computer off the internet and if you do any online banking or shopping, your sensitive information like credit card numbers, account login details, etc., are now in the the hands of cyber criminals for sell on the black market, so you need to contact your bank and any other websites or institutions to cancel accounts and change passwords from a known clean computer.

I don't mean to pass judgement, but I suspect the CS3 you downloaded was an illegal cracked copy infected with a trojan, so if your wife's computer is infected as well I wouldn't trust it when changing passwords either. Can you confirm this for me please? You have Bit Torrent and Limewire installed so I know it is common for some people to use this to download cracks, but that is the best way to get yourself infected with some very sophisticated malware that is near impossible to remove. Cracks are not free, better to find Freeware Replacements For Common Commercial Apps

You also have indications of two anti-virus and two firewalls installed along with having the Windows firewall enabled. This often causes damage to a system that is difficult to correct.

Because of the nature of the infections, compounded by your security setup, I recommend a reformat. There is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted to be completely clean. We simply can't guarantee that or that all the damage that may have been caused will be corrected--it is essentially like searching for a needle in a haystack.

Please read these articles:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

Help: I Got Hacked. Now What Do I Do? Part II

However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall XP and would like me to attempt to clean it, I will give it my best shot, just want you to know there are no guarantees and reinstalling is what I would do if it were my computer.

Let me know what your decision is. If you decide to continue, I will first need to know if you have access to another computer (other than your wife's) and what sort of medium you have available to transfer files from a clean computer to the infected one. In other words, the easiest way would be a USB flash type drive, and if you don't have one does the clean computer have a CD or DVD burner or floppy drive that you can use on the infected computer? If none id available, only connect to come to this site and to download needed tools.

Then the first thing you will need to do if you decide to continue, is to choose one AV/Firewall security Suite and uninstall the other. It looks like you may have attempted to uninstall McAfee, perhaps because it came preinstalled and the free trial ran out so I would recommend the following:

Go to the following page, and follow the instructions for manual removal using the removal tool VSCleanupTool.exe:

http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/faq.asp?frames=1&docid=71541

If, however, McAfee is subscribed to and is fully updated, uninstall AVG as it uninstalls much more easily.

When that is done, post back here with a new HijackThis log and let me know what you have decided to do.

The thing about people

is they change

when they walk away.--Mipso
