I had a crash and did a clean install - tried to use the Vista Backup and Restore utility. I am unable to open any files and am told I need permission to open - how do I do that? I also back up online and am restoring easily from Carbonite but am frustrated that I can't use my external hard drive to restore.
Thanks for your help!

Most likely you'll have to take ownership of the files in order to use them. Right click on them, select Properties, then the Security tab, then the Advanced button, then the Owner tab, then the Edit button.

Double click on your user name, put a check mark in the "Replace owner of subcontainers and objects" box, click on OK and exit the dialog for the changes to take affect. You may have to go back in and change the permissions after this if it still doesn't work.
