I use Firefox 99% of the time, but whenever I start the browser IE popups begin appearing shortly after and at regular intervals even after closing. Using XP.
HiJackThis log follows. I hope it is enough information to begin investigating a solution. Thanks in advance.

Apologies if this is not protocol, but continuing research this evening I ran across an article that describes the behavior I mention in the first post almost exactly. Particularly, the use of the search entry to dictate the nature of the popup window. While I cannot say I have seen the phrase 'powered by Zedo' in any of my windows, I would offer this link and inquire as to whether you think it of any benefit to try in addition to any comments you might offer based on the log. I will not utilize the suggestion contained in the link without your specific instructions. Adding it for reference's sake and discussion. Thanks in advance for your patience.

This is not a bump. I have made some progress toward eliminating the popups. I am continuing to work on the problem through additional channels. Feel free to delete this thread or move on to more recent user's problems if desired or I will simply post an update if and when the problem has been completely resolved. Thank you in advance.

No problem at all. I think I've managed to get fairly well cleaned up, but another set of eyes never hurts. The main symptoms seem to have disappeared, but the system seems the slightest bit sluggish after going through so many wash cycles. ;) When you have time to give it a look-see, it'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hello endgame,

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Stationery\Blank.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Stationery\Blank.htm

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

Using Windows Explorer delete the following file (if present): (To get into Windows Explorer, right click the START button and select "explore.")

c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Stationery\Blank.htm

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report
In your next reply please include the following:
  • A new HijackThis log.
  • The Panda ActiveScan log.

Thanks again for your continuing interest, RiP. I've taken care of the first part of your suggestion; waiting now for the ActiveScan to complete. That is taking SOME time. ;) Curious, though. So far Panda's ActiveScan has picked up 1 Virus, 11 Spywares, and 10 Hacking Tools and Rootkits. I'm sure there will be more before it's over. But I have Panda Titanium and have run it during the course of getting cleaned up to this point and, most recently, it's found only some harmless (relatively) cookies or ad-trackers. I know there's no definitive way of knowing, but why wouldn't it have picked these up like ActiveScan is doing? Is it possible they are 'that' recent and occured during or after the recent cleanups, or also that my definition file hasn't been updated since 25June? I would think they run with comparitive engines. Like I say, no way really to know and no real need to respond until I get you the reports. Just struck me as odd. Thanks again.

Hello endgame,

To be honest different programs just find different things no matter how good they are, but it's possible that panda is detecting false positives as well. It has a record of doing that sometimes, we'll know for certain when the scan is finished, though.

This is in no way a complaint, just another inquiry. Panda's ActiveScan has now been running since what, 2:30 this afternoon? It's currently scanning, and has been for some time, a group of files with .dat extensions in a location I'm unable to discern at a rate of app. 1 every 10-30 seconds:

875647 Files scanned ...ata\EXTERNAL\Ex_1458492532.dat

Based on your experience, and I know every machine is different but, do you recommend I just stay the course? The progress bar is approximately a quarter processed. Personally, I'm thinking 'hang in there, we've gone this far', but don't know if this is an abnormally long rate of evaluation. Thoughts are welcome. It's so easy to become impatient with PCs. ;) Only hoping for a nudge of encouragement. Thanks in advance.

Hello endgame,

I have only once before seen this scan take so long, I would definitely cancel that one and try this one instead if it's still going that slow.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner Please note: You MUST use Internet Explorer for this scan to work. )

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

All right, RiP. Kaspersky's done. I'll post the partial from ActiveScan, Kaspersky's, and the HijackThis run after Kasper's completion.

Hello endgame,

Please download OTMoveIt by Oldtimer and save it to your desktop.

Open notepad and copy (Ctrl C) and paste (Ctrl V) the following text in the codebox:

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{07B18EAB-A523-4961-B6BB-170DE4475CCA}]

Save it to your desktop as fix133.reg and as Type "All files"
Double click on fix133.reg and allow when prompted to let it merge with the registry.

Run OTMoveIt:
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):
c:\windows\downloaded program files\f3initialsetup1.0.0.15-3.inf
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\morpheus.exe
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\msimg32.dll
C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msimg32.dll
C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\riched20.dll
C:\QooBox
C:\WINDOWS\commandd.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Lycos\ss_IGN1_setup.exe
C:\WINDOWS\systbOld.dll
C:\WINDOWS\Win\svchost.exe

  • Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt
(If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.)
Click the red Moveit! button.
Please "Copy" the results from the "Results" window (to the right) and then "Paste" them into your next reply on the forum.
Reboot into Normal Mode.

In your next reply please include the following:
  • A new Hijackthis log.
  • The OTMoveIt log.

Thanks once again for the prompt attention and responses, RiP. Here's the OTlog and the HijackThis after reboot. I was not asked to reboot, but did so to give you the cleaned up Hijack. Hope that was your intention: (see edited added notes at end of post, please)

As I quickly look over the Hijack log, some items strike me as strange, but you're the expert. I notice symantec in there and I use no Norton software anymore at all. I should note that Panda did not boot up on startup as it usually does, I ran it after bootup. There is a line at the beginning indicating a costco.com that appears linked to my start page. It is not my start page, Google is. The various chat references must be my children. Should I lock them in their rooms? ;) Just thought I'd mention what I noticed instinctively. Thanks again. You're the best.

Hello endgame,

As I quickly look over the Hijack log, some items strike me as strange, but you're the expert. I notice symantec in there and I use no Norton software anymore at all.

If you're referring to the 016 lines, those are just activeX files downloaded from varying websites, nothing to be worried about  Try doing another reboot and see if Panda works correctly the next time, if not let me know.

Your log is actually looking pretty good besides the above mentioned, how is your computer running?

I was home briefly before returning to work and rebooted without difficulty. Panda did start up with the boot in this instance.

I have, personally, not seen any evidence of returning popups. Overall, the PC 'seems' to run a little slower than I recently recall, but that may simply be perception. No way to actually measure.

For all practical purposes, it appears to me pretty clean now. I'm considering running a few passes with CCleaner in all aspects, returning to a regular routine with Panda Titanium sweeps. I have downloaded and installed (from memory) AdAware2007, Search and Destroy, and SuperAntiSpyware. Would you suggest I keep these and run them regularly as well?

Lastly, the only line remaining that's suspect to me is O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=http://www.costco.com

As I indicated in the previous reply, that's not my home page. Does this affect anything?

I appreciate all your assistance, RiP. After your next reply, if it contains no further requests, feel free to close the thread or mark it Solved. Thank you.
Rest assured I'll be back if I am surprised by any new culprits.
