For starters: I got sacked with HSA/SW/SE and have been trying to do something about it. I've run hijackthis (obv), hsremove, regedit, norton, adaware, spybot, I've manually removed the programs from my programs list using instructions from Microsoft, gotten rid of temporary internet files... at one point in time (about 30 mins ago) I got a normal homepage rather thanthe about.blank page, but haven't been able to get anywhere since then... aaaand I'm sbout to start crying  lol. I'd appreciate any help, I just don't know what to do with this computer anymore...

Here's the HJT log:

Thanks for sending your HijackThis log.

You have been fighting a nasty infection called CWS About:Blank

It will take several messages to fix and then repair the damage done by it to your system.

Here is the first set of instructions.

1 -- This step checks for a service that is part of CWS About:Blank:
  • Download Service Filter
  • Extract it to it's own folder.
  • Click on ServiceFilter.vbs
  • A text file called POST_THIS will be created in the same folder
  • Please use 'Edit>Select All' then 'Edit>Copy' to obtain the contents
  • Please Paste them into this thread using 'Add Reply' at the end of the fix
2 -- Download the stand-alone version of CWShredder from CWShredder from Intermute. After you download the program, unzip it into a directory.
Do not run it yet.

3 -- Please download About:Buster from here: http://tools.zerosrealm.com/AboutBuster.zip.

Once it is downloaded extract it to c:\aboutbuster. Do NOT use it yet

4 -- Please disconnect from the Internet and unplug your modem for the duration of this fix

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping F8 while booting up and continue for the rest of the fix in SAFE MODE

Make sure all browser windows are closed and run cwshredder.exe to start the program and click on the FIX button (not the "Scan only" button) and let it scan your computer.

5 -- Run HijackThis, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\tspfv.dll/sp.html#14044

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\tspfv.dll/sp.html#14044

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\tspfv.dll/sp.html#14044

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\tspfv.dll/sp.html#14044

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\tspfv.dll/sp.html#14044

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\tspfv.dll/sp.html#14044

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {43E92535-41C0-42A6-6DD1-EC22B7AA19CC} - C:\WINDOWS\msdz32.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [apiyb.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\apiyb.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tibs3] C:\WINDOWS\system32\tibs3.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [apicm.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\apicm.exe

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.awmdabest.com

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.frame.crazywinnings.com

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.awmdabest.com (HKLM)

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.frame.crazywinnings.com (HKLM)

O15 - Trusted IP range: 206.161.125.149

O15 - Trusted IP range: (HKLM)

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, and remember to make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, then click fix checked.

6 -- While still in safe mode, use Windows Explorer to delete the following lists of program files and folders, if they still exist.

C:\WINDOWS\tspfv.dll <-- this file

C:\WINDOWS\msdz32.dll <-- this file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\apiyb.exe <-- this file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\tibs3.exe <-- this file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\apicm.exe <-- this file

7 -- This is the step where we will use About:Buster that you had downloaded previously.

Navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on aboutbuster.exe When the tool is open press the OK button, then the Start button, then the OK button, and then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.

Post the log file in your next reply

8 -- Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
Name the file as fix.reg
Change the 'Save as Type' to All Files, and Save it on the desktop

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\HSA]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SE]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SW]

Then double-click on the fix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes, and this will clear some registry entries left behind by the process.

9 -- Reboot your computer back to normal mode and Scan again with HijackThis. We still have a few steps to complete but a log file at this time would be helpful.

10 -- Post the logs from ServiceFilter and About Buster and your HijackThis log here in this thread with any questions or problems that you have run into.

There are still some steps that are necessary to clear out all of the malware. There will be necessary files that it has deleted that will need to be replaced.

After reviewing your logs, I'll follow up with the next set of instructions.

Thanks
daveai

Thank you so much for your help in this matter!

Here is the Servie Filter info, I'm about to reboot and start the rest of the steps, so I'll get that info up asap

The script did not recognize the services listed below.
This does not mean that they are a problem.

I ran CWShredder and the result it came up with was that CoolWebSearch was not found on my computer... not quite sure if this is relevent at all.

Not all the entries from the HJT that I was to delete showed up just now... Do you need to know what ones those were or does it not matter? I got rid of the ones that I could find from the list you sent earlier

Everything else seems to have gone well, I'm even back to a normal homepage, which is exciting

Anyhow, here's the Hijack This log from this afternoon:

Thanks.

Good work so far

There is still a little more to fix.

I'll post new instructions a little later this afternoon or evening

Thanks for the response.

Good work so far.

Your HJT log shows evidend of the MyDoom worm. To remove this please do the following

1. Please download Stinger and save it to your desktop

2. Double-click on the stinger.exe file and open the tool

3. Choose your entire hard drive to scan.

4. Choose Scan Now

5. Stinger will fix anything that it finds

6. Click the File menu and select Save report to file

7. Post the log file results here in this thread.

Now for those persistant O15 entries...

Copy the contents of the CODE Box below to Notepad.
Click File menu -> Save and name the file as move.reg
Change the 'Save as Type' to All Files
Save this file on the desktop.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\frame.crazywinnings.com]
"*"=dword:00000002

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\frame.crazywinnings.com]
"*"=dword:00000004

Double-click on the move.reg file on your desktop, and when it prompts to merge say 'Yes'.

And, now for the clean up fix...

Since you will not be able to access this page in safe mode during this fix, please print these instructions now, or save them to your desktop, to help keep track of the steps.

1 -- To start, follow this link for instructions to enable 'show all files' for your system.

2 -- After checking yourself against the following instructions, run AdAware and Spybot Search and Destroy:

Please see How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware for instructions on how to download, install and then use this software.

Please see How to use Spybot to remove Spyware for instructions on how to download, install and then use this software, which may catch things that Ad-Aware misses.

Please let me know if anything can not be cleaned by these utilities.

3 -- Run HijackThis, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TaskMon] C:\WINDOWS\System32\taskmon.exe

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.frame.crazywinnings.com

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.frame.crazywinnings.com (HKLM)

O15 - Trusted IP range: 206.161.125.149

O15 - Trusted IP range: (HKLM)

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, and remember to make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, then click fix checked.

4 -- Reboot into Safe Mode (How do I boot into "Safe" mode?).

5 -- Next, use "Start > Run" and type in "%temp%" (without the quotes). Delete the entire contents of that "temp" folder (use "Edit > Select All", press "Delete", click "Yes").

Then, Empty your Temporary Internet Cache completely. Close all instances of Outlook and and Internet Explorer, then use "Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab" and click the "Delete File" button. When prompted place a check in: "Delete all offline content", then click OK.

Then, use Windows Explorer to clean out ALL the other temp folders on your system (navigate to the folder, use "Edit > Select All", press "Delete", click "Yes"):

* C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
* C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\

* Empty your "Recycle Bin".

Please let me know about any problems with the temp file deletes.

Note: If you cannot delete them all at once because you have too many, then click and hold ctrl and highlight a batch of them at a time. Once highlighted, R-click over the highlight and select delete. Rinse, lather, repeat until folder is empty

6 -- Now, reboot normally and run at least two of these online virus scans (Or more if you wish.), reboot after each scan:

RAV<<<Add a check by 'Autoclean', leave everything else as is.

eTrust<<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful

Housecall<<<Put on 'Autoclean' and delete what it can't clean.

Panda ActiveScan<<<Accept default settings

Now, reboot once again, and run HijackThis to create a new logfile. Repost it here, and if you had any problems with the steps outlined above, please let us know what they were. Your response and the new logfile will determine the next steps for this fix.

Thanks

Okay...we are almost done.

First, you need to disable Spybot's Tea Timer for now, as it can interfere with the fixing of problems. Open Spybot and and make sure you are in Advanced mode. Go to the tools section and click resident and then uncheck the box for Tea Timer.

Then reboot normally.

Then, we knock down the persistant O15 infection:

Next, launch Notepad, and copy/paste the contents of the CODE box below
Save in: Desktop
File Name: fixme.reg
Save as Type: All files
Click: Save

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Ranges]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Ranges]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Ranges]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Ranges]

Back on the Desktop, double-click on the fixme.reg file you just saved and click on Yes when asked to merge the information.

Note that since the Restricted Domains are deleted by this fix, SpywareBlaster protection must be re-enabled. Spybot's Immunize feature must be used again, and you will also have to re-install IE-SpyAd if installed.

And then we do the clean up fix...

You are running Weatherbug, which is considered Adware, and has been known to install My Search. I recommend you remove it, and have included instructions to do this in the fix.

If you are looking for an alternative to weatherbug that does not display ads and is free, you might want to try WeatherPulse. An excellent weather monitoring tool that sits on your desktop like Weatherbug.

1 -- Next, use Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs to remove any of the following malware that you find:

WeatherBug
My Search

2 -- Run HijackThis, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

O15 - Trusted IP range: 206.161.125.149

O15 - Trusted IP range: (HKLM)

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Weather] C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe 1

These are optional items you may choose to fix:

Application Scheduler is installed along with RealOne Player and is running in startup, and is not needed. Once installed, it runs independently of RealOne Player and consumes resources. You can fix this with HJT, but you will also need to set it not to load in RealPlayer itself to keep it from resetting itself: (1) Start RealOne Player (2) Tools -> Preferences (3) Automatic services in the Categories pane (4) Uncheck all options and then OK .

It's also a good idea to rename realsched.exe itself to prevent this from re-installing.

This is the item to fix in HJT:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

Office Startup Asistant is an optional item that if checked, will eliminate a known resource hog. You will still be able to start Office components from the Start menu. This is the item to fix in HJT:
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, and remember to make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, then click fix checked.

3 -- Then use Windows Explorer to delete the following lists of program files and folders, if they still exist.

C:\Program Files\AWS\b] <-- this folder

4 -- Next, clean out all the temporary files and cookies on your system. Go to Start > Run and enter: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Check these three boxes and then press ok to remove: Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin.

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Please let me know about any problems with the temp file deletes.

Note: If you cannot delete them all at once because you have too many, then click and hold ctrl and highlight a batch of them at a time. Once highlighted, R-click over the highlight and select delete. Rinse, lather, repeat until folder is empty

Now, reboot once again, and run HijackThis to create a last logfile for me to review.

Also, please allow me to suggest some general prevention steps to keep one's computer clean and secure. You have already taken a few of the steps, but it never hurts to take a quick look

1 -- Be sure you update your anti-virus software at least once a week. There are several very good free programs available. Grinler offers an outstanding overview at Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

2 -- To reduce re-infection potential for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing three free programs: SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard (or Spybot's TeaTimer which does the same thing), and IE/Spyad.

3 -- Use AdAware SE and Spybot S&D to regularly to scan your system.

4 -- Continue to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

5 -- I strongly recommend that you consider using a Firewall. Just by using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Check out what Lawrence Abrams has to say at Understanding and Using Firewalls

An excellent overview is: [b]So how did I get infected in the first place?
. Be sure to visit the browser test link at the end of the article to really see how secure your system is!!

Thanks

The three things to be fixed by HJT didn't show up in the scan, just fyi...

As for the weather, I've been using Weather Channel desktop... should I ditch that too for WeatherPulse, or is it pretty safe?

No problems were had with deleting the temp files, or anything else. WeatherBug made me feel bad about deleting it - it puts on this whole show about how it could save my life... oh well lol

Here's the lastest HJT scan:

You are welcome. It's a pleasure to help.

The weather channel is fine...it's weatherbug that is associated with adware.

Now, please allow me to suggest some general prevention steps to keep one's computer clean and secure. You have already taken a few of the steps, but it never hurts to take a quick look

1 -- Be sure you update your anti-virus software at least once a week. There are several very good free programs available. Grinler offers an outstanding overview at Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

2 -- To reduce re-infection potential for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing three free programs: SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard (or TeaTime, which does the same thing), and IE/Spyad.

3 -- Use AdAware SE and Spybot S&D to regularly to scan your system.

4 -- Cintinue to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft.

An excellent overview is: So how did I get infected in the first place?. Be sure to visit the browser test link at the end of the article to really see how secure your system is!!

And...one last reminder:

Note that since the Restricted Domains are deleted by the last fix, SpywareBlaster protection must be re-enabled. Spybot's Immunize feature must be used again, and you will also have to re-install IE-SpyAd if installed.

Thanks for visiting Bleeping Computer
