My sister's computer is having problems with the Internet Explorer homepage being changed to about:blank and now they can not access any other websites. The computer is a Windows XP Home Edition SP2. The norton anti-virus definitions are up to date, I am fairly sure the Windows files are up to date. Here is copy of the Hijack this log. Any help would be appreciated.

Please Download LSPFix from: LSP-Fix

Disconnect from the Internet and close all Internet Explorer windows. Run then program, check the "I know what I'm doing" button and place all listings of

winlspak.dll

into the remove section by clicking on the button that points to the right. Do not remove any others. When all instances of this dll are in the Remove section. Press the Finish button.

REBOOT your machine.

To see a tutorial on how to use this program click the link below:
Using LSP-Fix to remove LSP Spyware & Hijackers

Download the stand-alone version of CWShredder from here
Install the program.

Make sure all browser windows are closed and run cwshredder.exe, and click on the FIX button (not the "Scan only" button) and let it scan your computer.

REBOOT your computer and post a new hijackthis log please.

I downloaded and installed the LSP software and moved the file to the Remove side. That worked. I then ran CWShredder and it showed a message that no Cool Web Search files were found. Here is the HiJack This log after rebooting.

Trust me, CWShredder has done a good job.

You have also other malware. Please be patient .

1. Download and save PeperFix.
REBOOT in SafeMode: Starting your computer in Safe mode, use the F8 method,
and run the program.
It will remove the files, leaving one orphaned entry to be cleaned up with Hijack this.

2. REBOOT again into SafeMode and run it again for good measure.

3. REBOOT normally.

Download System Security Suite here:
System Security Suite Download & Tutorial. Unzip it to your desktop.
Install the program. Don't use it yet.

Please download About:Buster from here: About:Buster Download. Once it is downloaded extract it to
c:\aboutbuster. We will use that program later in this process. Don't use it yet.

Download Ad-aware SE: here
Install it. When you get the last screen, with the "Finish" button and 3 options, uncheck those three items.
Open AdAware and click the "Check for updates now" link. Close AdAware. Don't use it yet.

Please print or copy these instructions because you are not able to access the Internet in SafeMode.

Make sure you are set to show hidden files and folders:
A. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options.
B. Click the View tab.
C. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
D. Uncheck Hide extensions for known filetypes and Hide protected operating system files.
How to see hidden files in Windows

REBOOT into SafeMode by tapping F8 key repeatedly at bootup: Starting your computer in Safe mode

Run HijackThis!, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these:

I ran the utilities in the order you said to in the previous post. I was not able to run the online scan and I noticed that my Norton AntiVirus is not loading at startup. I went into NAV and couldn't enable the autoprotect nor could I enable the e-mail scanning. I am posting this from a different computer. Here is my latest HiJack this log.

You may want to print out these directions as the Internet will not be available. Please continue with the next step if you run into a problem with the current one. Just be sure to let us know what the problem was when you reply.

This is very important ! Internet Explorer should remain closed during the cleanup. If you open Internet Explorer the fix will fail. (Steps 1 - 8)

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files:

Please download About:Buster from here: About:Buster Download. Once it is downloaded extract it to
c:\aboutbuster. We will use that program later in this process. Don't use it yet.

Download Ad-aware SE: here
Install it. When you get the last screen, with the "Finish" button and 3 options, uncheck those three items.
Open AdAware and click the "Check for updates now" link. Close AdAware. Don't use it yet.

Download the cws-hsa.reg file to your desktop. We will use it later.

Step 1:

Go to Start -> Run and type Services.msc, then press the OK button. Look for a service called Network Security Service. Double click on that service and press the Stop button, and then set the Startup type to Disabled. Press OK, and close all the windows.

Step 2:

Press control-alt-delete to get into the task manager and end the follow processes if they exist:

appyy32.exe

This is very important ! Internet Explorer should remain closed during the cleanup. If you open Internet Explorer the fix will fail. (Steps 1 - 8)

Step 3:
Run HijackThis!, press "Scan" and tick the boxes next to all these, close all other windows and browsers, then press "Fix Checked" button.

O23 - Service: Network Security Service - Unknown - C:\WINDOWS\Halo.exe (file missing)

Step 4:
Reboot your computer into Safe Mode.

I now need you to delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\deczy.dl l<-- this file
C:\WINDOWS\sdkgo.dll <-- this file
C:\WINDOWS\appyy32.exe <-- this file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tibs3.exe <-- this file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Hogikc32.dll <-- this file
C:\WINDOWS\Halo.exe <-- this file

If you get an error when deleting a file, right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is, uncheck it and try again.

Step 5:

Double-click on the cws-hsa.reg file you saved earlier on your desktop, and when it prompts to merge say Yes, and this will clear some registry entries left behind by the process.

Step 6:

This is the step where we will use About:Buster that you had downloaded previously.

Navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on aboutbuster.exe When the tool is open press the OK button, then the Start button, then the OK button, and then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.

When it completed move on to step 7.

Step 7:

Run AdAware, press the Start button, uncheck Scan for negligible risk entries, select Perform full system scan and press Next. Let AdAware remove anything it finds.

Step 8:

Clean out temporary and Temporary Internet Files. Go to Start -> Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Step 9:
Reboot your computer back to normal mode so that we can restore files that were deleted by this infection:
  • This infection deletes the windows file, shell.dll.
If you are using XP,2000, or NT please download shell.dll from here: shell-dll.zip. Once the file is downloaded uncompress the zip file and copy shell.dll to the following locations (%windir% being the windows or winnt directory):

    %windir%\system32
    %windir%\system
  • If you are using Windows 98*Grinler please download shell.dll from here: shell-dll98.zip. Once the file is downloaded uncompress the zip file and copy shell.dll to the following locations (%windir% being the windows or winnt directory):

    %windir%\system
  • Download the Hoster from here. Press Restore Original Hosts and press OK. Exit Program. This will restore the original deleted Hosts file.
  • If you have Spybot S&D installed you will also need to replace one file. Go here: SDHelper.zip and download SDHelper.dll. Copy the file to the folder containing you Spybot S&D program (normally C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy). Then click Start -> Run -> type regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll and press the OK button
Step 10:

Please check Internet Explorer settings:
Open Internet Explorer - > Tools -> Internet Options ... -> click the Security tab -> click Internet icon -> press the Custom Level ,,, button.
Under ActiveX controls and plug-ins tick:
- Download signed ActiveX controls - Prompt
- Download unsigned ActiveX controls Disable
- Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe Disable
- Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins Enabled
- Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting Prompt

Run an online antivirus scan at:

I ran the above steps. Notes about the results.
- appyy32.exe did not appear under the processes when I pressed control-alt-del.
- after booting into Safe Mode and deleting the listed files, the following were not in the specific directories: c:\windows\sdkgo.dll, c:\windows\system32\Hogikc32.dll, c:\windows\Halo.exe I went into the directories to look for the files and ran a search but nothing showed up.
- I still wasnt able to run an online virus scan from http://housecall.antivirus.com I get to the first message to install the active x control and then the computer will freeze. I hit control-alt-delete, end Internet Explorer. When I reopen IE, the homepage is about:blank again.

Step 2:

Press control-alt-delete to get into the task manager and end the follow processes if they exist:

d3oc32.exe
appdk.exe

This is very important ! Internet Explorer should remain closed during the cleanup. If you open Internet Explorer the fix will fail. (Steps 1 - 8)

Step 3:
Run HijackThis!, press "Scan" and tick the boxes next to all these, close all other windows and browsers, then press "Fix Checked" button.

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [appdk.exe] C:\WINDOWS\appdk.exe

O23 - Service: Network Security Service - Unknown - C:\WINDOWS\Halo.exe (file missin

Step 4:
Reboot your computer into Safe Mode.

I now need you to delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\vpfij.dll <-- this file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\crqz.dll <-- this file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\d3oc32.exe <-- this file
C:\WINDOWS\appdk.exe <-- this file

Step 7:

Run AdAware, press the Start button, uncheck Scan for negligible risk entries, select Scan Volume for ADS and press Next.

Run an online antivirus scan at:
http://housecall.antivirus.com/
Please make sure that AutoClean is checked.

Reboot and post a new HJT log.

Ok, I ran the steps mentioned. Here are notes on the steps:
- Network Security Service was already stopped. I set it to disabled
- Neither d3oc32.exe nor appdk.exe were listed under processes
- HiJack This: 023 Service:network security service - unknown - c:\windows\halo.exe (file missing) was not listed in the scan results.
- c:\windows\system32\crqz.dll was not present so wasnt deleted
- c:\windows\halo.exe was not present so wasnt deleted
- housecall scan: 135 infected files found, 130 deleted, 5 could not be accessed. All 5 files were listed as trojan HideProc.B
- Norton AntiVirus still did not load at startup.
- Should system restore be disabled during this process?
- Should these processes be run for all profiles or will one profile suffice?

Here is the HiJack scan result:

Should system restore be disabled during this process?

There is no reason to do this now. When your computer is clean you can create a healthy restore point.

Should these processes be run for all profiles or will one profile suffice?

Not yet. If you belive other users are infected you can post a hijackthis log for each user later.

5 could not be accessed. All 5 files were listed as trojan HideProc.B

Did you delete these files ? Probably you can do this only in safemode.

Download the inf file (right click, --> Save Target As) and save it to your desktop.

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file on your desktop and select 'Install'

REBOOT and post a new log please.

Log looks clean. Problems gone ?

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

How did I get infected ? With steps so it does not happen again !

Glad I was able to help.
Everyday is virus day. Do you know where your recovery CDs are ?
Did you create them yet ?

thank you very much for all your help. I definitely would not have been able to clean this thing out without your help. I certainly wouldnt have known about all the utilities that were used. This site is certainly helpful. The computer seems to be running fine, well as far as this one profile goes. There are two other profiles on it as well. This is not my computer that was infected but I am going to suggest changing all three profiles to a limited account type. Hopefully this will lower the chance at another infection, as well as the link on keeping the computer clean. Thanks again.
