My two year old PC (a Medion) has only now started giving trouble. I have lost my System Restore and, in spite of fantastic help from Bleeping Computer experts, the problem is unresolved. A HiJack Log tells me there are quite a few files missing and this might possibly be one of the reasons for the loss of System Restore.

I would appreciate, please, any help you can give me concerning entries that should NOT be in my Log, and entries that should.

I have lots of programmes installed on my PC to protect it and I woner now whether I have too many. They include:

AddAwareSE ; SpyWare S&D; Bit defender8 (Free) ; Spy Blaster : Advanced Windows Care V2 Professional: ATF Cleaner; C. Cleaner; CWS Shredder: EUsing Free Registry Cleaner; SuperAnti Spyware professional; Tweak Now registry Cleaner.

These are in addition to Zone Alarm and A Shampoo Magical Defragmenter.

I run Windows XP and have , according to my anti-virus and spyware programmes a "clean"PC. McAfee Avert Stinger is clear also.

Here is my logfile, and i would truly appreciate your help, and thank you in advance.

Hello Reena,

I see no malware in your log.

Are you sure about those names you listed?

Let's look in your uninstall manager to see what you have installed.
Open HijackThis
Go to 'config'
Go to 'misc tools'
Press the button 'open uninstall manager'
Press 'save list'
A notepad file will open.
Post the content here in your reply.
Close HijackThis.

Hi Reena,

You have one antivirus BitDefender 8 Free Edition running which is good.

These are all all antispyware programs and are Ok to leave
Advanced WindowsCare 2.51 Professional
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4
SpywareBlaster v3.5.1
SpywareGuard v2.2
SuperAnti Spyware professional
WinPatrol

Ad-Aware SE Personal and ewido anti-spyware 4.0 are old versions, so uninstall them.

The new versions are called Ad-aware 2007 free http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
and AVG antispwyare (formerly Ewido) http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/lng/us/tpl/v5
so you can download them and install them.
Disable the AVG antispyware Guard feature, as you already have WinPatrol running. Only one registry protector is necessary and two will slow your computer.

I would get rid of (uninstall) AVG Anti-Rootkit Free, as that is an advanced tool and should be used only with expert help of the Hijackthis forum.
Get rid of CWS Shredder, as that is updated freqently and run only when you have a CWS infection.

You can leave the two utility programs Ashampoo Magical Defrag and CCleaner.
And keep your firewall, ZoneAlarm Pro

I dont recommend you using any registry cleaner such as EUsing Free Registry Cleaner or Tweak Now registry Cleaner, as it is too risky.

Thank you again, SiFuMike. I have done as you advised. I was unable to uninstall ewido antispyware 4 for some reason in the Add/Remove section. and I was unable to find it in my Programs section. Strange, that!

When you advised : Disable the AVG antispyware Guard, did you mean the Shield?
