Windows 98
1. In Windows 98, boot the computer to the Startup menu and then click Command Prompt Only.

For more information about how to boot your computer to safe mode, please see the following article.
180902 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/180902/) How to start a Windows 98-based computer in Safe mode
2. Type the following at the prompt: ren c:\explorer.exe explorer.old, and then press ENTER.
3. Restart the computer.

when i typed ren c:\explorer.exe explorer.old it gave me cannot find - explorer.exe

it didnt work... can anyone tell me the command prompt line of text to run a disk from the disk drive because i cant even get to the start>mycomputer>diskdrive....

Microsoft won't give me what i have to type in to run the windows xp disk from command prompt...

Are you trying to repair your 98 install, repair XP, or install XP.
If you want to boot the XP CD are you sure the computer can boot from a CD? Many older computer that ran 98 could not boot to the Cd that is why 98 came with a boot floppy. Also check your BIOS to make sure the CD is first in the boot order.
