Computer Troubles

i just recently purchased a laptop. the rest of my family uses an older dell desktop running xp. it is acting up. it is slower than normal, and i can not open up anything. is there anything i can do? i need to get in the computer so that i can set up my network.

Could you describe what is "Slower than normal"? What security software are you running? What version of windows are you running? What are your system resources? RAM installed, amount used, and the amount of virtual memory total and used?
