I have a Compaq PC with a Semperon Processor 3400+. The specifications sheet says that it also supports AMD Atholon 64, AMD Atholon 64 X2, Semperon Processors

I feel that the Semperon is not the worlds greatest processors, so would like to upgrade.

Is it just a simple matter of swapping over the PCPU, and will everything just work, or is it more complicated

If it is that easy which processor should I go for, a faster Semperon or an Atholon 64, and if the latter what speed.

my motherboard is ASUS A8M2N-LA

any advice would be great
thanks folks

Anything in the Athlon 64 X2 catgory will be a great choice. One tip is that you don't need alot of processing speed with 2 cores since it divides most things by two. So anything Here is a great choice. The difference's between the cores names are speed, and the amount of L1 and L2 cache. The more cache you have the greater the processing speed since the processor wont have to rely on the RAM as much which takes more time to access than the cache.

So would the following - Athlon 64 X2 3600+ Windsor 2.0GHz 2 x 256KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 Processor - be better than my current CPU - Semperon 3400+ and if so would I really notice the difference

many thanks

Yes it will be better, You will notice a big difference when multi tasking. Mulitiple programs will load faster and be more responisve. I know windows vista takes advantage of Multiple processor cores and runs alot faster. Since your looking at upgrading your processor how much ram do you currently have? Upgrading memory has a dramatic effect on how your computer runs, and if your looking into dual core processor not enough ram will only bottleneck the CPU.

what's your OS and ram currently installed?

what do you mostly do with the computer?

onboard video and shared memory probably hold you back from even lamer uses.

No. Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try.

I only had 256 memory with this PC - I got it cheap. I have addedd an extra 1 GB
it has four slots and can take up to 4GB
I have windows XP and do not want to upgrade to Vista.

I am thinking - upgrade to a a low priced, Athlon 64 X2 3600+ Windsor 2.0GHz 2 x 256KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 Processor

add another 512mb ram

I only have onboard graphics

so I would add a cheap low end card, maybe Nvidea 128mb 0f ebay or something

what do you think

would I get a better system
and would it be worth the cost and effort
