Hello, this is my first time doing this so hopefully i'm doing everything correctly. I went through the Preparation Guide for use before posting a HijackThis Log and think i did everything correctly. The problem i have is just that i keep getting internet explorer pop ups while i'm using firefox. Here is the log, hopefully i cleared some stuff out by going through those steps and there isn't much to take care of.

Hello deadpool22,

I am SifuMike and I will be helping you.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
Additional info: http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_137262.htm

I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

Viewpoint
Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player
Viewpoint Toolbar

Alos uninstall these and dont be concerned if they dont exist
WinAntiSpyware 2007
SalesMonitor

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

How to Reboot into Safe Mode
tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key. If that does not work this go to this site: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-start-windows-in-safe-mode/

Please boot into Safe Mode and select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix."

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1E147983-334D-4B23-9A0F-D6C99F77D9A0} - (no file)

These are optinal fixes. The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but we suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] \"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe\" -osboot
(Description: RealPlayer scheduler. Completely unnecessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

(Description: Nvidia system tray applet. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] \"C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\jusched.exe\"
(Description: Sun Java update scheduler. Checks for updates. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following files/folders in bold (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

C:\WINDOWS\poolsv.exe <==file
C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinAntiSpyware 2007\ <==folder

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

CAUTION: Please do NOT use the Issues button. This is a built-in registry cleaner. If you don’t know how to use it, you may cause irreparable damage to your system.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
• Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
• Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
• Clean all entries in the "System" section.
• Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
• Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
• Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
• Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Reboot to the Normal Mode

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the ComboFix log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Post a new Hijackthis log, ComboFix log and tell me how your computer is running.

Hello SifuMike,

Thanks for helping me out. I followed your instruction and here are the new Hijackthis log and the ComboFix log.
My Computer seems to be running fine, of course i just finished doing the instructions and have only been using it
for a few minutes now but everything seems fine and doesn't seem like anythings wrong. Actually after my first
post I noticed that I wasn't getting any more IE pop ups any more, must have gotten rid of it because of following
the Preparation Guide you guys have here. Well here are the logs, hope everything is clean and thanks again for
taking the time to help me out.

Hi deadpool22,

I need to check your Uninstall manager listing.

Open HijackThis
Go to 'config'
Go to 'misc tools'
Press the button 'open uninstall manager'
Press 'save list'
A notepad file will open.
Post the content here in your reply.
Close HijackThis.

Please download the OTMoveIt by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\mpqss.ini2
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\mpqss.bak2

  • Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

I have started to notice that the internet connection has been a bit slower than usual and also failing sometimes and I got a limit or no connection warning a few times. I don't know if it was to do with any of this but just thought I'd mention it just in case. Probably just my crappy connection hahahaha.

Hello deadpool22,

You need to uninstall these old versions of Java, as they can still be exploited by malware.

Click on start, then control panel, and then double-click on add/remove programs.
From within add/remove program uninstall the following (if they exist) by double-clicking on the following entries:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.1

Did you install this Java by accident? It is for developers and is old.
Java 2 SDK, SE v1.4.1

Make sure you leave the latest version Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1 installed.

I have started to notice that the internet connection has been a bit slower than usual and also failing sometimes and I got a limit or no connection warning a few times. I don't know if it was to do with any of this but just thought I'd mention it just in case. Probably just my crappy connection

I ment any popups or malware. Your internet connection times sounds like a provider problem and you could post to another of our forums as see what they say. This forum specializes only in malware removal, not in hardware, software, IE, or Windows issues.

Let me know if you have any problems uninstalling any of the old Java.

Hello SifuMike,

Yeah I thought it was my connection. If it keeps giving me problems I'll post on the other forums for connection problems.

Alright I uninstalled the old versions of Java that where listed and kept the Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1. The reason
I had Java 2 SDK, SE v1.4.1 is because I took 2 Java classes and the book that the classes used had that on the disc that came with
the book and I installed it. I got use to doing my assignments with v1.4.1 so I didn't uninstall it and use a later version.

I dont know much about the Java 2 SDK versions. :flowers:
You might as the instructor of the Java class (or the maker of the disc) if the later version of Java 2 SDK, SE v1.4.1 work with the disc. Find of the version number you need for the disk.
If it does work with the disk, then get rid of the old version as it will be vulunable to malware attacks.

Your Hijackthis log looks clean.

Let's clean your System Restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows.
The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files.
This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Turn off System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK

2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE, NOT on a regular basis

System Restore will now be active again.

Please read and follow How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!

Hello SifuMike,

It's alright I don't need v.1.4.1 anymore since I finished my Java class 2 weeks ago. I'm gonna start using
the lastest version of Java if i need to do any programming.

I did the system restore stuff. Cool, my Hijackthis log looks clean. Thanks a lot for your help.
Is there anything else I need to do?
