Hi,
What started it all, I heard my Dial-up modem trying to connect to the Internet and saw a window after visiting a Normal website.

I have followed the advice for getting rid of spy-ware etc etc as well as running the online scanners from Kaspersky, Pandasoftware, Nanoscan (a part of Pandasoftware), Windows Live Onecare and Bitdefender. I have updated and run Ad-aware, Spybot, AVG Anti-Spy and Anti-virus in Safe-mode and normal mode.
Even in Safe-Mode, Firefox opened up and said that it couldn't connect to www.12345678901234567891.com as I wasn't connected to the internet (I was in Safe mode). But most of the time it is trying to connect via dial-up modem which I dis-activated. I have also run CCLEANER. I have tried Cleanmgr but it didn't give me any options, aprt from which drive to choose.

It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.
Never argue with stupid people, they'll just bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.
If at first you do succeed, try not to look surprised.

Hello English Teacher,

Please download SmitfraudFix

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

I wish to thank you for your quick reply. AVG Anti-spy is still discovering Dialers mainly in C:\Windows\Temp and in C:\Windows\system32 They are Trojan.Dialer.qn and Dialer.agent.k
In Windows\Temp there are about 230 files named winX.tmp or winXX.tmp or winXXX.tmp and a few winXXX.temp.exe
I have run Spybot again and it has found the following:
Microsoft.Windows.IEFirewallBypass
HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile\AuthorizedApplications\List\C:Programmi\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE
HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile\AuthorizedApplications\List\C:Programmi\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE

Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888
HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSMGR

Hello English Teacher,

We are going to go after the Smitfraud infection first.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of the Smitfraudfix report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

At the moment I have also run another scan of Spybot. Nothing was found. Seems the Smit has gone. However instead of Spybot searching for 69000 and something items, It has gone down to 67209. I have run Update but to no avail. Is this because of the SmitFraud scan?

My ZoneAlarm Pro firewall has another 3 Dialers in the Program Control Panel. I have told it to Kill them!!
As it just gave them a ?

Hello English Teacher,

Seems the Smit has gone. However instead of Spybot searching for 69000 and something items, It has gone down to 67209. I have run Update but to no avail. Is this because of the SmitFraud scan?

Yes. It removed some files.

somebody being told to rename Hijackthis to another name for some reason.....should I do the same and why?

It is a good idea to rename Hijackthis, as some malware hides from Hijackthis.
  • Please go to the folder where you saved Hijackthis.exe:
    C:\HIJACKTHIS\HijackThis.exe
  • Right-click on it, then select Rename.
  • Name it something like: AnalyzeThis.exe (or whatever you want, like FluffyBunny.exe)
  • Then double-click AnalyzeThis.exe (or the name you chose) to scan.
Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

How to Reboot into Safe Mode
tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key. If that does not work this go to this site: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-start-windows-in-safe-mode/

Please boot into Safe Mode and select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix."

O23 - Service: WKXEOJTD - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\Andrea\IMPOST~1\Temp\WKXEOJTD.exe (file missing)

*******************************************

Next, we're going on a file hunt.
Go to My Computer and double-click C.
Go to the Tools menu and select 'Folder Options'.
On the 'View' tab select 'show hidden files and folders',
deselect (uncheck) 'hide protected operating system files (recommended)', and
deselect (uncheck) "Hide extensions for known file types.'

Don't use the windows start\search feature
Using Windows Explorer, find and delete each of the following. If you can't delete an item, right-click it and click properties. Make sure 'read-only' is unchecked.
If you still can't delete something, right-click it and rename it to a random word. Then drag the item to a different location. Try deleting it now. If you still can't, be sure to let me know.
Using Windows Explorer, delete the following files/folders in bold (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\winA4.tmp.exe <==file
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winopn32.dll <==file

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

CAUTION: Please do NOT use the Issues button. This is a built-in registry cleaner. If you don’t know how to use it, you may cause irreparable damage to your system.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
• Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
• Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
• Clean all entries in the "System" section.
• Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
• Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
• Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
• Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Reboot to the Normal Mode.

You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.

Disable your antivirus program and go here to run BitDefender Online Scan.
Click on I Agree.
Avoid clicking on other links as you don't need to try out the full install at this point, just the online scanner.

When the ActiveX Control has loaded, click on "Click here to scan".
Please be patient, as this scan may take a few hours. It all depends on the number of files on your computer.

NOTE: If you are running XP SP2, you may need to click on the Information Bar to allow the ActiveX to install and may need to repeat the BitDefender Online Scan.

When BitDefender completes the scan, select the "Detected Problems" tab.
Click on "Click here to export scan".
Save the file as an HTML to your Desktop.
Then click on the saved file and allow it to open with your browser.
Go to Edit - Select All then copy/paste that log back here.
Post the BitDefender log.

post a new Hijackthis log, the BitDefender log.

Hello English Teacher,

Your log looks much better. Now we do some minor cleanup.

Your need to disable Spybot TeaTimer while we use Hijackthis, as it will prevent registry changes.

Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
On the left hand side, Click on Tools
Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer.

Be sure to enable Teatimer after we are done using Hijackthis.

*******************************************

In Normal Mode, select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix."

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D4D5806E-EA2C-45b2-972D-8BE237697B87} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {0E5F0222-96B9-11D3-8997-00104BD12D94} -

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

*******************************************

Reboot your computer.

Please perform this online scan: Kaspersky Webscan
This scan require Internet Explorer to run.
Read the Requirements and Privacy statement, then select "Accept"
A dialogue box will appearing asking "Do you want to install this software?" Name: kavwebscan_unicode.cab
Select "Install" to download the ActiveX controls that allows ActiveScan to run.
When the download is complete it will say ready, click "Next"
Select a target to scan: Click on "My Computer"
When the scan is complete choose to save the results as "Save as Text"
Post the Kaspersky scan results in your next reply, along with a new Hijackthis log.

The .....\SECURITY\mwav.exe is Microworld antivirus. It is NOT active and I've read that it can be used with AVAST without compromising either scanner
It seems to me that I must disable SYSTEM RESTORE!! That is what you are going to tell me next, I think!!

Hello English Teacher,

I am very sorry I mixed up the logs!!!
Sorry

That is OK, I know how confusing it is with all these logs.

Looks like you still have a Vundo infection. Usually there are more files than Kaspersky listed so we will run ComboFix.

Please download the OTMoveIt by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\dbxDgrevCheck.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\exnqkixi.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tfoeftnm.dll

  • Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the ComboFix  log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
Trojan Hunter has been reported to detect combofix as Worm.Qiv.100.

It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.
Never argue with stupid people, they'll just bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.
If at first you do succeed, try not to look surprised.

Hi English Teacher,

You have some suspicious files we need to check.

You will need to configure Windows to show Hidden files.

Go to next site: http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html
On top you'll find 'Browse'
Click the browse button and browse to next file:

C:\DOCUME~1\Andrea\vlc-0.8.6b-win32.exe

Click open.
Then click the 'Send' button next to it.
This will scan the file. Please be patient.
Save the results in notepad.

Perform the same for next files:
C:\WINDOWS\xobglu16.dll
C:\WINDOWS\xobglu32.dll

Once scanned, copy and paste the results also in your next reply.

I usually enter my email address at virus total so they can send me the scan results. They usually only take a couple minutes to reply.
You can copy/paste the results of scan results here.
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!
