Posted 16 June 2007 - 11:40 PM

I've tried getting rid of this software with Ad-Aware, Spybot, CC Cleaner, and Symmantec Anti-virus. Then today I bought and tried Spyware Doctor and Spyhunter. Both of these got rid of some of the SpywareSoftStop files, but never got the program to disappear.

I also found this website earlier today, and printed out several pages of explanation on how to get rid of SpywareSoftStop. I got so far as to download and run the HijackThis program, however, my results did not match up with the filenames that I saw on this website's posting, so am unsure of how to procede from here. At this point, I am hoping that someone who is more knoweledgable than me can figure out what I should be doing. I will appreciate any help I can get on this topic.

Hello there and welcome to Bleeping Computer's security forum.
My name is David, I will be helping you with your log today.
This is quite a nasty log, but of course I'll do my best to get you cleaned up.

It is a good idea to print off these instructions. There is a possibility some of the instructions will need to be carried out where internet access is not available. It is important that you complete the instructions in the right order, and that you don't miss out any steps.

I see you have Viewpoint installed.
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2007 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove any programs related to Viewpoint if present

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start, open My Computer, select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.

Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present:

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Now reboot into Safe Mode.
This can be done tapping the F8 key as soon as you start your computer
You will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.
Make sure you choose the option without networking support.

Using Windows Explorer, please locate the following files/folders, and delete them if still present:

C:\Documents and Settings\Clarke Bean\sthbdm32.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\Clarke Bean\mxcrtp.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\Clarke Bean\wintst.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\stubext.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\mssvmdll.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\system.exe

I want you to clean your cache and cookies from your internet explorer.
There are a few infected files which need to be removed from your system.

° Close all instances of Internet Explorer .
° Go to your control panel and open "Internet Options".
° Click on the "General" tab.
° Click the "Delete Cookies" button, then the "Delete Files" button.
° If prompted, place a tick in the "Delete all offline content" box and click OK.

Also, please clean other Temporary files and Empty the Recycle Bin

° Go to start and click on the "run" button.
° Type the following in the fox --> cleanmgr and click ok.
° Let it scan your system for files to remove.
° Make sure only Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are checked.
° Press OK to remove them.

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

Please download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combofix.exe to launch the application.

Follow the prompts that will be displayed on the screen.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
Don't forget to post the SDfix log too!

David et al.

Thanks for the help thus far. I tried following your instructions, and had some success, but not all the problem is cleared-up yet. Right now, the screen background is still hijacked to black screen with the error message "Your computer is in Danger! .....", and the computer is still running slow. On the good side, the annoying pop-up messages have gone away, and we have gotten rid of the red ball with the X through it from the toolbar.

When I was running Hijack This, there were several files that looked similar to the ones you listed for me. The beginning part of the name and the long code number matched what you had, but either the filename was different, or it was listed at a different location that what was in your email. In these cases, since the match was not exact, I did not check the boxes to eliminate those files.

One more item, when I was in SAFE mode and deleting the 6 files you mentioned, the last file on your list was C:\WINDOWS\System32\system.exe I did not find this exact file, but I found ...\systerm.exe. I went ahead and deleted that file even thought it was not an exact match.

Here is the report file from COMBOFIX

Good work! Let's continue..

It is a good idea to print off these instructions. There is a possibility some of the instructions will need to be carried out where internet access is not available. It is important that you complete the instructions in the right order, and that you don't miss out any steps.

I've seen this infection has been very stubbourn recently ad the files morph to stop you from deleting them. I've chosen to use an automated method now which should delete the files successfully on a reboot; it saves you a bit of time too. You were right about the systerm.exe file, that was my fault; however both files are bad so it wouldn't have mattered anyway. The backgroud will be one of the last stages of the fix, but it should be dealt with soon.

Download KillBox from the following link :
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/killbox.php
Unzip the folder to your desktop.

Click on start, then control panel, and then double-click on add/remove programs.
From within add/remove program uninstall the following if they exist by double-clicking on the following entries:

SpywareSoftStop
WinTools
<--don't worry if you can't find either.

Using Windows Explorer, please locate the following files/folders, and delete them if still present:

C:\Program Files\SpywareSoftStop
C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools

Start Killbox.exe
Select the "Delete on Reboot" option.
Click on the "All Files" button (!important!),which will then flash green.
Copy the complete text in bold below to the clipboard by highlighting the filepaths and pressing Control + C:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\posterm.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\svhc32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\systerm.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\uncwqs.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wintst.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\regdll32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sthbdm32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\krnl32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mstsk32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winhid64.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\Clarke Bean\svhc32.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\Clarke Bean\posterm.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\Clarke Bean\krnl32.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\Clarke Bean\dfgaert.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\Clarke Bean\mssvmdll.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\Clarke Bean\regdll32.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Clarke Bean\stubext.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\Clarke Bean\winhid64.dll

Open 'file' in the killboxmenu on top and choose Paste from clipboard
You must use the file File menu--pasting by right-clicking the mouse will only enter one file.
Then press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it.
Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be removed on next reboot and asks if you would like to Reboot now, click "yes".
Click OK at any Pending File Rename Operations prompt, let me know if there appear.
If you don't get that message, reboot manually.
Your computer should reboot now.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Open the file and it will extract the contents (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1, and press Enter.
A text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

David

I completed the steps from your last set of suggestions, but have seen no real change. The computer is still running slow, and the background is still black with the error message.

There were no entries in the Add/Remove section for either SpywareSoftStop, nor for WINTOOLS. I did delete a folder and all contents for C:\Program files\SpywareSoftSTop. I saw no entries for ...\Common Files\WinTools

Killbox ran without any extra prompts.

Here are the results of the SmitfraudFix:

Good work! Let's continue..
This log is looking a lot better..

It is a good idea to print off these instructions. There is a possibility some of the instructions will need to be carried out where internet access is not available. It is important that you complete the instructions in the right order, and that you don't miss out any steps.

Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0d83f4ad-c2e2-6b40-64b8-1cf61baabdfb} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\wintst.dll (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Please perform this online scan: Kaspersky Webscan
Read the Requirements and Privacy statement, then select "Accept"
A dialogue box will appearing asking "Do you want to install this software?" Name: kavwebscan_unicode.cab
Select "Install" to download the ActiveX controls that allows ActiveScan to run.
When the download is complete it will say ready, click "Next"
Select a target to scan: Click on "My Computer"
When the scan is complete choose to save the results as "Save as Text"
Post the Kaspersky scan results in your next reply, along with a new Hijackthis log.

Also please can you describe to me your desktop background, what the words are/colours etc..

David

I had not shut down the computer between our last messages, and I had left Hijack this open, so all the files you listed were still there. I checked those files and clicked on FIX checked.

I ran the Kasperky file immediately after the HijackThis Fixing. Then I shut down the computer and rebooted. I see no change in the computer's behavior. At first during the rebooting process, I get my normal background, but no icons. Then the screen turns white, and the desktop icons come up. Then the screen turns to black, the desktop icons are still visible. At the lower right portion of the screen (above the toolbar), I get the following in White Font

" Your Computer is in Danger!
Window Security Center has detected spyware/adware infection!
It is strongly recommended to use special antispyware tools to prevent data loss."

The computer takes longer-than-normal to boot-up, or to go from one application to another.

Here are the results of the Kaspersky_scan (taken before reboot):

Ok, let's continue...

It is a good idea to print off these instructions. There is a possibility some of the instructions will need to be carried out where internet access is not available. It is important that you complete the instructions in the right order, and that you don't miss out any steps.

Download CWShredder here to its own folder.
Open CWShredder.exe and click the Check For Update button.
After downloading any necessary updated, please close the program.

Now reboot into Safe Mode.
This can be done tapping the F8 key as soon as you start your computer
You will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.
Make sure you choose the option without networking support.

Once in Safe Mode, please find and delete these files:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\warn.htm
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\remove_me.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\jsconsole.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\iframeworks.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\fxiegwfr.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\c_10230.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\corelsys.dll
C:\WINDOWS\corelsys.dll
C:\spe
C:\Downloads\tw2Setup-dm[1].exe

Now run CWShredder again, by doubling clicking on the program you downloaded earlier.
Click "Fix" and then "Next", let it fix everything it asks about.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder again.
Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.
Also post a new Hijackthis log.

David

I'm keeping my fingers crossed, this last attempt may have cleaned everything up. After going through the procedures and rebooting, I did not get the "Your computer is in Danger..." message, but my desktop screen background was all-white (with icons visible). The boot-up was going very slowly, but I did mange to get to the Desktop settings. I was able to select another color/pattern and it stayed-up. As I was scolling down the list, at the bottom I saw "warn" listed as an option, and that option caused the screen to go white. However, I was able to pick any other option and have it stay up once I exited Desktop Settings.

I then did a restart. Upon booting up (again slow), I went back to Desktop settings. This time, the "warn" option was gone. I suspect that the initial boot-up was not complete the first time.

I also tried turing-off the Spyware Doctor Real-time Guard. When I did this, my operational speed went back up to what it was before this malware started (and before I put Spyware Doctor on my machine).

Thanks so much for all the guidance.

Here is the Rapport file that was created before the first boot-up:

Great to hear that your desktop is back to normal!
I think that Spyware Doctor could be conflicting with other real time programs, hence causing a slow down.
I would recommend you uninstall it for the time being, and try a free alternative as an antispyware.

There are a few steps I want you to complete to try and resolve the slow down on your computer.
A whole host of reasons might account for this slow down, but I will highlight the most prominent ones below.
On most computers malware is the most common cause, but at the moment I do not think this is the case.
You might like to limit the programs that are loading when your computer starts, you might have unneccessary software loading whn you boot your computer which is eating away at your CPU and ultimatley slowing down your computer. Many programs install a quick launch feature which is not needed; if you want to use the program you can start it up manually. The easiest way to see whether a program is needed at startup, you can use bleeping computer's own list, which gives an indication of whether the program is required/optional etc. Note that essential processes such as those for your anti-virus or your modem must be kept.
So, firstly click on start, then run and type msconfig. Then hit enter.
Click on the startup tab and a list of programs will appear.
You can compare the startup name with those on the startup list., link is below:
www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups

To stop a program loading at boot just remove the tick.
Click "Ok", and choose to restart.

You might like to try and clear clutter off your computer, and free up some space on your harddrive.
Old games, unwanted photos and unused programs could be a starting point.
You can also clear clutter such as temprary files by doing the following:
Go to start and click on the "run" button.
Type the following in the box --> cleanmgr and click ok.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure only Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are checked.
Press OK to remove them.

Next you can defragment your hard-drive...when was the last time you did this?
Windows puts new files in any available open space and defragging will cluster files closer together making your harddrive more efficient.
This saves wear and tear while speeding up programs.
1. Open My Computer.
2. Right-click the local disk volume that you want to defragment, and then click Properties.
3. On the Tools tab, click Defragment Now.
4. Click Defragment.
5. This process takes quite a long time, so be patient.

Oh yeh and also try running the Windows repair facility:
Go to Start...Run...and type in "sfc.exe /scannow" (without the quotes) and press Enter. It may ask for your XP Installation CD. Once it's done, please visit Windows Update to ensure that you've got the latest hotfixes and updates (sfc.exe replaces system files when it runs).

Reboot and let me know how the PC is running, the HJT log is clean now.

David

I did as you suggested and defragmented the hard drive, and I got rid of several unused programs. When I tried to follow the instructions for editing the list of start-up programs, I ran into a barrier. I went to the webpage you provided, and I assume that I was supposed to go to the AUTORUNS page, download another program, run the program, then compare that list to my MSCONFIG listing. When I clicked on the AUTORUN link, I get a "PAGE CANNOT BE FOUND" error message. I tried accessing this from one of the tutorials also, with the same negative result.

So far, the biggest boost to performance has been after I turned off Spyware Doctor.

So far, it appears that SpywareSoftSTop is gone.

Autoruns can be found at the following link:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysintern...s/Autoruns.mspx
However, if you found that spyware doctor was the cause of the slow down, it might be best to leave your startups alone.

The latest log is looking clean!
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will be reduced dramatically.

Use an Anti Virus Software -
* It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine.
* This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
* Click here for more information on -> Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
* I would recommend Grisoft's AVG or AVAST.
* These are the more secure and better ones.

Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall -
* I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
* Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over.
* Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
* For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
* Click here for more information on -> Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
* I would recommend ZoneAlarm as a firewall as it's easy to use.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently -
* It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
* This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
* If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Next, if they're not already present, I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (all free), and the updating of them regularly

Install Spybot© - Search and Destroy- Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
* This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
* You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software.
* A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
* Click here for more info -->Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

Install Lavasofts© Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware.
* You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot.
* A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
* Click here for more info -->Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

Install Javacools© SpywareBlaster -
* SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer and Firefox settings and that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
* A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
* Click here for more info -->Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
