My husband is having trouble with playing games on our computer. We have windows XP. Our Dell computer is only about 2 years old. One thing worth mentioning is that our modem was hit by lightening last year. As far as I can tell it was the only thing affected. It just makes it so we can't use dial-up. Anyway, everytime my husband goes to play a game from CD, it won't open. He's able to download the games to the system without any trouble, but when he tries to play them he just gets a flash of a white screen and then that's it. Sometimes the initial game menu will come up, but then when you click to play the game, it just flashes and then nothing. Any ideas of what's going on?

If the drive works on every other occasion then the problem will more than probably with the game or application that access it.

I had a similar problem when using the game "Never Winter Nights 2". It would install game (down loading as you say) then allow play once and cause problems thereafter. Since it only happened whilst playing this game it was easy problem to track.

Does this problem ONLY happen when playing the game?

I used to have an old HP that wouldn't start up the newest DX8 games at the time. I couldn't find an answer but I would probably blame your RAM or something's speed is too low.

It seems to be happening with all his games. I wonder if it's something with the speed or the 3D technology since my daughter's simple games will play. His used to play, but now they won't.

Update your DirectX and all that... that's all I can say. I never actually figured out what my HP's problem was.
