I used to play the sims (first version of it) but after a while of playing it say an hour or so it just goes out of the game mainly when you go to town, don't know why.

Processor P4 2.8GHZ
512mb ram
80GB hardrive
128mb graphics (3D graphics as well)
Direct X 9.0c
Disc drive 16X

When i got The Sims 2 (didn't like it very much - as nothing to do they should have left off from the last game)

Anyway it plays a little slow after about an hour just goes out of game as well. i did a system check with the game and there was a tick next to each one i was more than the game required.

Anyone know why?

You may want to update your video drivers to the latest and greatest available

When was the last time that you defragged in Safe Mode?

If you have the game running for a while, then it stops, you could have a few things to look at. You have already mentioned that your video card has 128 MB RAM-that should not be the problem. Updated drivers-nope, that is taken care of (maybe). Lets go over a few other ones.

Have you eliminated all unnecessary background programs? Open Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL). If you have over 40 items open under the Processes tab, you may have some things running that you do not need. DO NOT STOP THE IMAGE NAMES UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!! Maybe something to consider.

If there is an options panel in the game, try changing them for best game performance and keep the video effects turned down.

As i don't play the first sims i won't worry about it.

I play sims 2 only.

Now i have the game options thingy where graphics and relfection etc all at a minimun or off. it has made the run faster but after about an hour or so it still goes out of game.

Now in task manager in the process tab there's about 42 in there there is one that there about 8 times. some of them close and some of them come back i know you leave system and that as it's in the instruction book. would i run out of ram, i do have 512mb that's double to that on the box 256mb, woul 1024mb ram help if i double it, which i can?
or is it something else?

Extra RAM is always helpful, though you should have enough with 512MB. I would certainly try to eliminate as many background processes as possible first, and see how that effects game play.

i managed to close about 8 applications in the processes tab.

runs a littl longer about 2 hours now which is enough as i usually get about that much time to play it on weekends.
