This computer is infected with popups and spyware that I just can't seem to get rid of. As far as I can tell, pop-ups are the only problem, but it also seems to be slower than usual (though there's also a mo-bo problem, which could account for the slowness). I have cycled through Spybot/Avast!/Ad-Aware to trim out the main stuff, but some things just won't go away.

Specifically, Spybot continually brings up Smitfraud-C (both Toolbar888 and CoreService) as well as Virtumonde. I tryed to stop Virtumonde from starting at Windows startup but apparently something else keeps opening it anyway. I have uninstalled various programs using the Add/Remove dialoge (Drive Cleaner, Virtumonde, View Point Media Player that I can remember). Stinger and Ad-Aware now come up clean, but Spybot and Avast! come up with a few items every time I scan (the same few each time). I haven't seen WinAntivirus 2007 anywhere in any of the scans anymore, but I know at one point it was on this computer and now some of the pop-ups bring me to that site.

This computer didn't have any spyware/adware protection when I started working on it, but I have since installed Ad-Aware, avast! and Spybot and have gotten them up to date. There are no critical updates for Windows.

One more thing: I keep getting a Visual C++ Runtime error which says something there was a "Buffer Overrun error" with explorer.exe. I then hit OK and the process restarts (my desktop and startbar flash, etc). I have looked it up and this may be due to a legit program so it's down low on my list of priorities.

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

Disable AVG Anti-Spyware:

1. Open AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the multi-colored box emblazoned with an 'S' in the system tray.
2. In the 'Resident Shield' section, toggle the AVG Anti-Spyware active protection 'off' by clicking 'Change state' which will then change the protection status to 'inactive'.
3. If you are instructed to reboot at any time during your cleanup, AVG Anti-Spyware will prompt you as to whether you would like to "Restart the Resident Shield".
4. Reply 'no' and set it to 'inactive' for the duration of your cleanup.

Have Hijack This fix the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting 'Fix checked'.
Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing:
