Hello,

My computer is consistently running at a CPU utilization of 78-100%. This occurs even when there are no applications running. With no applications running, taskmgr.exe is taking the majority of cpu cycles. Performance is sluggish to unusable. I have performed the steps that are requested before posting a hijackthis log, and all that was reported were some cookies.

The Hilackthis log follows.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Joseph

Welcome to the BleepingComputer HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum jfosco

It appears you've no virus protection installed.
Download\install one of the following freeware options from the choice below.
Once installed update its definitions and then run a full system virus scan.

AVG7 Free Edition Antivirus:
http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup...ree_446a965.exe

Avast! 4 Home Edition:
http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe

Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic
http://www.free-av.com/

************************

Please download Combofix and save to your desktop:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/Beta/ComboFix.exe
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.
Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Also post a new Hijackthis log please.

Thanks for the assistance. I did have a virus scan installed, but I removed it recently because I thought it might be the source of the problem. It wasn't.

I did install the AVG virus scan and it did not find anything.

Below is the ComboFix.txt file and a new hijackthis log.

Thanks so much for looking at this.

I have been thinking about my problem, and I was wondering, do you think this could be caused by IE7? This is the only even relatively new application I can recazll having installed.

Thanks,
Joseph

Have Hijack This fix the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting 'Fix checked'.
Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing:
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - %windir%\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: @xpsp3res.dll,-20001 - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - %windir%\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe (file missing)

I have been thinking about my problem, and I was wondering, do you think this could be caused by IE7? This is the only even relatively new application I can recazll having installed.

Try removing it via Start/Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs, then restart your laptop.
You can always reinstall it later if that is not the problem.

---------------------------------

Well your Hijackthis log and Combofix logs are clean, lets try the following.

Download and scan with the free 15 day trial of Counterspy V2
Save the report when it's finished:
1.Once Counterspy has done scanning, the 'Scan Results' box will appear.
2.Click on 'View Results'.
3.Under (Recommended Action),using the drop down menus at the side of each entry found, set EVERYTHING to 'Remove'.
4.Then click on 'Take Action'.
5.Once everything has been removed, click on 'View Details'.
6.Copy and Paste those details into your next reply.

---------------------------------

Run the F-Secure online virus/spyware scan using Internet Explorer:
http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml
Follow the directions in the F-Secure page for proper Installation.
Accept the License Agreement.
Once the ActiveX installs,Click ‘Custom Scan’ and be sure the following are checked:
1.Scan whole System
2.Scan all files
3.Scan whole system for rootkits
4.Scan whole system for spyware
5.Scan inside archives
6.Use advanced heuristics
Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
The scan will take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan completes, click the ‘I want to decide item by item’ button.
For each item found,Select ‘Disinfect’ and click ‘Next’.
Click the ‘Show Report’ button, then copy and paste the entire report into your next reply.

Hello,

It has been quite awhile before I was able to try these latest items. I have attempted to follow your instructions. I was able to download and run Counter spy. The log is included below.

I have been unable to run the scan from f-secure. Whenever I attempt to run it, it takes so long with my computer running at 100% cpu utilization, that the computer eventually overheats and shuts down. I have done various things to attempt to keep the computer cool, but I haven't been able to get through the entire scan. I will continue to try.

I was wondering if it might be possible to run the scan in sections. I could then allow the computer to cool off between runs.

Let me know what you think, or if you hhave another suggestion.

Thank you for all your help,

Joseph

Hello,

I was able to run the f.secure scan. The first time I got it to run all the way through, I did not get to make the choices you asked. I pressed "System Scan" and it started without offering any choices. Then, when it was complete, I went to decide item by item. I did not realize there were additional pages, so when I pressed "Next" I am not certain that disinfect was chosen for the virus it detected.

So, I ran the f-secure scan again. I hit stop on the scan when it detected the virus. This time I did select disinfect. However, it appears from the log that it did not disinfect.

I have attached both logs below.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks again,
Joseph

Hello,

It seems my computer is somewhat better, but it still has a problem. Right now it will run normally for about 15-20 minutes, then the cpu utilization will go up to 75-80% and stay there.

Below is a new HJT log.

Thanks for your assistance
