Briefly my problem is as follows:

My homepage has been hijacked. It is described as ABOUT:BLANK but it is a web search page. I can't change this. I also have an unwanted address bar and another unwanted search bar. I get pop ups and items added to my favourite list without my permission. While using the internet, pages are crashed by pop ups. I am also being prompted to buy Spyware software, which I assume is connected to the problem.

The problem started 4 days ago when I was tricked into downloading the hijack bug. I have McAfee virus software and have since used Spybot, Adware, Xoftspy Spyware Blaster and Mozilla Firefox. The problem continues.

My level of computer expertise is limited, but a computer technician at work has offered to help or rebuild my machine if necessary.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My HijackThis log is as follows:-

Hello Toepoker,

Download CWShredder 2.1 from http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshr...r_download.html and run it.
Let it fix what it finds.

*********************************************************

Be sure to run Adaware SE with a Full Scan in the Safe Mode.

How to Reboot into Safe Mode
tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key.

The following explains how to set Ad-aware's settings to perform a "Full Scan."

In Ad-aware click the Gear to go to the Settings area.

The following items should be on a green check, not on a red X.

Under the Scanning button:
Scan within archives
Under Memory & Registry, Check EVERYTHING
In Check Drives & Folders, make sure all of your hard drives are selected

Under the Advanced button, check ALL under Log detail level.

Under the Tweak button...

Some of these may not be an available option, depending on your version of Ad-aware and your version of Windows.  Do not be concerned if you cannot select a certain item.

In Scanning Engine:
Unload recognized processes during scanning
Include info about ignored objects in logfile, if detected in scan
Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
Include used command line parameters in logfile

In Cleaning Engine:
XP/2000: Allow unloading explorer to unload shell extensions prior to deletion
Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
UNCHECK: Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion

Click Proceed to save these settings.  When you would like to perform a "Full Scan," switch the scan mode from SmartScan to Custom.

*********************************************************

Please download, update and run the free A2 (A squared) anti-trojan

Let it fix whatever it wants to.

*********************************************************
I know you may have anti-virus software, but sometimes its definitions are corrupted due to malware. Online scans are the best resort in this case.
Run this pc through the Panda Scan Online virus scanner
or
Trend Micro Housecall Online virus scanner

*********************************************************

Next, reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log to this thread.

Thanks SifuMike

Two points from the last instructions:-

I did lock home pages from changes with Spybot and have fixed it via Hijackthis as you suggested.

I couldn't find the file C:\WINDOWS\System32\iecust.dll so was not able to delete it.

I have done everything else that you asked. My homepage is ok now and the address bar is gone, no more pop ups. My machine is running slow though. Here is my latest Hijackthis log.

Thanks again.

A further update on the position with my computer on starting up this morning.

The homepage problem appears to have been fixed. I am now able to set up my own homepage and keep it there.

Other problems persist. One of the other users on the computer (there are 5 of us in the family) has a search2.com toolbar and address bar that arrived after the hijack last week and are still there. I also received a pop up this morning. Also the 6 websites that add themselves to my internet favourites were there again this morning. A Wave Out scanner and monitor icon arrived on my desktop when I started up this morning. Also I see that some of the other usershave a Spysubtract icon on their desktop. Also the machine is running very slowly.

Hello toepoker,

I do not see much malware left in your log, but lets try this.

Please boot into safe mode and select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.”

How to Reboot into Safe Mode
tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key.

did you put this in your Trusted Zone? If not "fix" it.

Hello SifuMike

First a report on how my computer is working.

The homepage/about blank problem appears to be fixed. Thank you for this. A number of other problems remain as follows. Under my daughter's login, the SEARCHWEB.2COM toolbar and address bar remain. I've tried manually deleting these and checked unlock toolbars, without success. Another Spyware removal icon called WAREOUT has appeared on my desktop and runs when I start up stating I have 1080 spyware files. I've read that this is a bogus program. This appears in the log at least 3 times and I assume that this can be removed. Also SPYSUBTRACT appears elsewhere. Is this program ok? I still get 6 internet sites adding themselves to my favourites folder every day without my permission. I also am still getting some unwanted popups still.

I have never put anything in my trusted zone. You can delete everything suspicious as far as I'm concerned.

My system is running very slowly. I would appreciate any advice on speeding up my system and what virus/hijack protection to use in future, before you close the topic.

Thanks for all your valuable help so far.

I have made the latest changes you suggest and here is my current Hijackthis log:-

Hello toepoker,

It looks like you picked up lots more malware since you last visit. You said you have 5 users on this computer, so tell all your kids NOT to surf the web until we have your computer cleaned.
*******************************************************

Do a Hijackthis log on your daughters login, as she has malware that is not in the current Hijackthis log. Make sure you tell me which log is yours and which log is hers.

SPYSUBTRACT is a legitamate program made by Intermut.

*******************************************************
Download SpywareBlaster from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html and install it in each of the the 5 users. SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware getting on your computer. It is a free program, but they ask for a donation if you like it.

Here is a SpywareBlaster tutorial:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...showtutorial=49

*******************************************************
The following fix will remove the O15 entry.
Please note that it will delete all entries in the IE's Trusted AND Restricted zones, so if your use IE-Spyad or SpywareBlaster, you will need to reprotect yourself after we run this.

Download the attached zip file and unzip it to your desktop.
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf
Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select 'Install'
This should clear out those trusted entries that will not be removed.

*******************************************************
Please boot into safe mode and select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.”

How to Reboot into Safe Mode
tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key.

*******************************************************

Next, we're going on a file hunt.
Go to My Computer and double-click C.
Go to the Tools menu and select 'Folder Options'.
On the 'View' tab select 'show
hidden files and folders' and deselect 'hide protected operating system files (recommended)'.

Find and delete each of the following. If you can't delete an item, right-click it and click properties. Make sure 'read-only' is unchecked.
If you still can't delete something, right-click it and rename it to a random word. Then drag the item to a different location. Try deleting it now. If you still can't, be sure to let me know.

Delete the following files/folders in bold:
C:\Program Files\WareOut\ <=== folder
scanSYS.exe <=== file you will need to search for these files. They may be in C:\WINDOWS\ or C:\WINDOWS\System32\
_ctcp.exe <=== file
Uint32.exe <=== file
ActionScr.exe <=== file
SysEntry.exe <=== file

*******************************************************

Let empty the temp files:

When in Safe Mode, open notepad and paste in the following lines:

del c:\ *.tmp
del %temp%\*.tmp /f
del %windir%\prefetch\*.*
del %windir%\temp\*.* /f
del C:\documents and settings\*\local settings\temp\*.* /f

Save to desktop as 'clean.bat'. Make sure before you save to set 'file types' to all types. ( *.*)

DoubleClick on the icon, and say Yes when prompted.

*******************************************************

Please run the free A2 (A squared) anti-trojan

Let it fix whatever it wants to.

*******************************************************
Run this pc through the Panda Scan Online virus scanner
or
Trend Micro Housecall Online virus scanner

Let them fix whatever they find.

*******************************************************

Finally, reboot and post a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.

Hello SifuMike

WAREOUT has gone, thank you. I also now have software that appears to be blocking some pop ups.

Unfortunately the ABOUT:BLANK problem has returned. This is now present in all 5 users. This recurred while I was in the other users setting up Spywareblaster.

Other problems remain, i.e., daughter's unwanted SEARCHWEB.2COM toolbar and address bar, unwanted items posting to all 5 users favourites. My computer is running slow again.

I did all you asked except getting a result for the file hunt. I managed to delete the folder, but could find none of the file after looking in the folders and performing a search of my whole computer.

Hijack this files for me and my daughter are attached below. I can do logs for the other 3 users if you require them.

Thanks again.

The following is my Hijackthis log:-

I have a good news/ bad news situation for you. The bad news is that Mike's computer suffered an irreperable crash. The good news is that he didn't forget about you, and asked me to step in. I am going to need a bit of time to review your logs and see exactly where you have been so far, so hopefully you can be patient a little while longer until I can get back to you.

Thank you for being so patient. We're going to tackle this ine user at a time. If you would log in as yourself.

We need to get rid of that CWS infection first. Some of this may be repetative, so please bear with me. This is a bugger to remove sometimes.

First, open IE, then click on Tools>Options>delete files. This will flush your temp folders.

Open notepad and paste in the following lines:

del c:\ *.tmp
del %temp%\*.tmp /f
del %windir%\prefetch\*.*
del %windir%\temp\*.* /f
del C:\documents and settings\*\local settings\temp\*.*

Save to desktop as 'clean.bat' , file types as 'all-files'. We will use this later.

Download the latest version of Adaware here:

Adaware
Install it, but don't run it yet. Click on the globe in the upper right hand corner to get the latest updates.

Please download the CWShredder (Standalone version).

Download and install APM from here:
http://www.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=apm
(don't run it yet we will get to that in a minute)

Put a checkmark next to the following entries in HijackThis. Make sure all
other windows and browsers are closed before clicking on “Fix Checked”
.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\mcicdb.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)

Now, start APM.
In the upper window select explorer.exe
In the lower window find and rightclick the O2 - BHO: entry from your HijackThis log.

In the current log it is this file but it may have changed names.
It is currently :

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {957D82B2-0813-4438-84A5-CA591BE54A38} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\mcicdb.dll
<--This file name

It is the 02 BHO entry with no description, in case it has changed names. It is not tied to any program you recognize.
Select Unload DLL, and click OK on the prompts that follow.

Don't worry if it doesn't show up. If not, just skip this step and go on to the others.

**********

Boot into SAFE MODE by tapping the f8 key during boot up.

Run the clean.bat now. Click yes when prompted.

Run the shredder. Let it fix everything it finds.

Scan with AdAware to automatically remove the txt and html protocol associations and to clean up the remnants of the hijack.

Reboot and post a new HJT log please. Don't panic if it isn't gone. Sometimes it takes a couple tries to remove this fully.

Thanks for your advice.

I already had adaware installed. I updated it with the latest updates as you requested.

I got Hijackthis to fix the entries that you requested with the exception of the five O2 lines and the O3 line as these had disappeared since I prepared the last log.

No success with the APM. I didn't find the O2 - BHO entry in the lower window, but C:\WINDOWS\System32\micicdb.dll was there. I didn't see the Select Unload DLL option that you mentioned . Perhaps I didn't install the program correctly?

I'm not sure if 'clean bat' worked. I did what you asked, but the version on my desktop was 21 January. The program continues to ask me questions which I say Yes to until it stops.

Since my last post, I have installed Microsoft Antispyware which has removed some spyware. I also lost conact with the internet completly yesterday, but was able to restore my settings to 19 January with Spywareblaster.

The following is my latest log:-

The mcicdb.dll was the right one. Did you right click on it when you highlighted it?

The steps are exactly the same. Run through them again and see if you can kill the mcicdb.dll this time. If you can't, we will have to killbox it.

Be very careful with MSAS..the result you described happening with it is a known bug with the BETA version.

Post a new log when you are done.

Also thanks for the information about MSAS.
