This third-party software for Messenger has been around for some time, and apparently works quite well. However, I have read some discussions that indicate it contains some adware (I believe you can opt out of it during installation), so be careful about what you install.

Any IM application has it's inherent risks when connected to the internet. Be careful who you accept files from or even better none at all. Be wary of divulging information. Most of it is common sense.
