Hi,

I got this a week or so ago. Internet Explorer started going to sites I never selected. Also, I started getting seemingly spontaneous virus and spyware warnings.
A Spybot scan showed SmitFraud-C.Toolbar888 as well as some other stuff . I'd click fix on SpyBot and it said it was fixed, but still shows up even the next time I reboot my PC. I tried rebooting in safe mode and fixing with spybot but this doesn't work. The other stuff clears off with Spybot, but keeps getting loaded again.

I also tried using a SmitFraudFix that had worked previously, but it doesn't do anything now.
I don't know whether that' different for SmitFraud vs. SmitFraud-C. Tool bar

Other symptoms were a popup that said "Failed to initialize application. Restart your computer and try again" which I would just X out of.
Then a popup that said initializing Mycleanerpc which I would try to X out of, but that never seemed to work. Then the myclearner pc 'application' would start, and I'd use task manager to kill it, two or three times. Finally, I was getting a "VirusScan On-Access Scan Message" which would pop up at various times during an internet session.

Since then, I have downloaded and started to use FireFox. I've gone through the preparation steps.
1) cleaning temporary internet files and temp files.
2) running ad aware (3 times) and spybot.
3) scanning for malware using housecall.
4) running stinger
5) installing the sygate firewall
6) updating windows.

My hijack logfile is below.

Thanks very much.

Welcome to the BleepingComputer HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum Bob666

My name is Richie and i'll be helping you to fix your problems.

You have MyCleanerPC installed.
MyCleanerPC is a program that may give exaggerated reports of threats on the computer.
The program then prompts the user to purchase a registered version of the software in order to remove the reported threats.
You'ed be well advised to remove it via Start/Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs, then restart your pc.

*************************

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
When VundoFix re-opens,click the "Scan for Vundo" button.
Once it's done scanning, click the "Remove Vundo" button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click "YES".
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed,it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click "OK".
Post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt into your next reply.

Note:
It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case,VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

*************************

Please download Combofix and save to your desktop:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/Beta/ComboFix.exe
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.
Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Now go to:
C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe
Right click on Hijackthis.exe and select 'Rename', rename it to xyz.bat
Double click on xyz.bat(which is still Hijackthis.exe),post that log into your next reply please.

Hi Richie,

I used remove program to uninstall mycleanerpc. while that was running Sygate popped up
with a message that mycleanerpc was trying to connect to the internet to install itself, and did I want that to go through. of course I clicked no. I still got a browser window open in Firefox to the mycleaner website stating that they were sorry I was uninstalling their product ! I just closed the window.

While I was going through this procedure, I got a "Framework Services" is trying to access the internet from Sygate. Not knowing what "Framework Services" was, I stopped it. But now examining the HijackThis log, it looks like Framework Services is part of the McAfee virus scan. I assume this should be OK to let run ?

What is VundoFix ? How is it different from ComboFix ? Why did you have me rename the HijackThis application ?

Thanks very much.

Hi Richie,

Things seem to be working a lot better now. I had some trouble running the java install,
but got it in today. Spybot only shows FireFox's AdAgent. Smitfraud doesn't show up !

I'm still curious about the Framework Services and whether that should be enabled or not
in the firewall.

Thanks very much !

I'm still curious about the Framework Services and whether that should be enabled or not in the firewall.

Framework Services is indeed part of the McAfee virus scan and should not be blocked by Sygate.

Find and delete:
VundoFix.exe
Combofix

*************************

Run 'BitDefender Online Scanner' using Internet Explorer:
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
Read the 'END USER SOFTWARE LICENSE AGREEMENT' then click 'I agree'.
You'll be prompted to install the activex control, please do so.
Once installed, disable your current antivirus program, then click the 'Click here to scan' button.
The virus signatures will then load.
Once loaded the scan will start.
The scan will take quite some time so please be patient.
Once the scan has finished select the 'Detected Problems' tab.
Click on 'Click here to export scan'.
Save the file as an HTML file to your desktop.
Then click on the saved file and allow it to open with your browser.
Go to 'Edit'/'Select All' then copy and paste that log into your next reply.
*Note*
Don't forget to re-enable your antivirus program.

Also post a new Hijackthis log please.
Let me know how your pc is running now.

Hi,

Looks like there was something wrong with the Java installer from Sun ?
Is that right ? Anyway, the PC seems to be behaving as well as last
time. I hope you're having a good weekend.

Regards !

Looks like there was something wrong with the Java installer from Sun ?
Is that right ?

Launch HJThis, click 'Open the Misc Tools Section'.
Click 'Open Uninstall Manager'.
Click on 'Save List',save it to your desktop.
Copy and paste the content of that list into your next reply please.

Here you go. I do get an occasional popup from sygate when I'm browsing that says NT kernel is trying to access the internet. I'll try to catch it next time I see it.

Thanks.

Richie,

I've got one question left. Sygate reports NT Kernel & System ntoskrnl.exe as periodically
trying to accesss the internet and being blocked. Is this normal ?

Spybot & AdAware show all clean.

Thank you very much for all your help. I really appreciate it.

Regards, Bob
