Hey All.
I believe I've been infected with Smitfraud-c.Toolbar888 and have been having the same problem that many others have had after running Spybot - Smitfraud remains. I get popups frequently now, and it's been causing my computer to give the BSOD and restart within a couple minutes of being turned on - this usually happens as soon as an internet browser is opened.

I've run AdAware, Spybot, and AVG Free Ed. I've scanned with windows defender, and did a search using SmitFraudFix. I ran VundoFix and it found many files that it was able to delete, however I still had Spybot's resident running, and it blocked the registry changes.

- Can I manually fix these registry entries? (I ran VundoFix a second time after rebooting, and it didn't find any more files)
- Do I have anything else on the computer that needs attention?

Below are my HiJackThis (v1.99.1) and the SmitFraudFix logs.

Thanks in advance.

-Mike

By the way, those BHO .dll's that I mentioned in my last post only show up in the HiJackThis v2.0.0 log. I don't know if that makes a difference - I didn't recognize any bad processes in the log that I posted.

Thanks again,

Hi -

Please download Combofix from one of the following links:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
- and save to the Desktop.

1. Double click on combo.exe and follow the prompts.
2. When finished, it will produce a logfile located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
3. Post the contents of that log in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.

Note: Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause your system to stall/hang.

Post back with ComboFix.txt and a new HijackThis log.
Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints.

Hi -

Uninstall the following programs:
- Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
- Select DealHelper.com > click Remove
- Select webHancer > click Remove

You will need to print these instructions because you will be working in Safe Mode without an Internet connection.

We need to disable your Microsoft Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
* Open Microsoft Windows Defender. Click Start, Programs, Windows Defender
* Click on Tools, General Settings
* Under Real-time protection options, unselect the Turn on real-time protection check box
* Click Save

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
Do not scan with it yet.

Please set your system to show all files.
- Go to Start > open My Computer
- Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
- Select the View tab and, under Hidden files and folders, select Show hidden files and folders
- Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types
- Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
- Click Apply, then OK

Reboot into SAFE MODE
To get into the Windows XP Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times. Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.

Navigate to and delete the following folders if present:
C:\Program Files\DealHelper.com
C:\Program Files\webHancer

Navigate to and delete the following files if present:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wdi7.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\aschapr.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\dp-him.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msmc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\bridge.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\tircli.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wnsapisu.exe
C:\Program Files\webHancer\Programs\whSurvey.exe
C:\documents and settings\michael cola\local settings\temp\xospH.exe

Run SDFix
- Choose your usual account
- Right-click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All
- Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
- Type Y to begin the script.
- It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
- Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
- Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
- When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
- Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt in your next reply.

Post back with Report.txt and a new HijackThis log.
Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints.

OK,
So I checked for dealHealper and webHancer and neither of them existed. Also, none of those files you said to manually delete existed either. I did have all hidden files and system files showing and I was in safe mode. Here are the logs from this last run.

Thanks,
-Mike

Hi -

Before we continue, I see that you have two Anti-Virus ("AV") programs installed on your system. Having more than one AV installed will likely cause your system to run slowly and/or become unstable as well as seriously decrease the reliable detection of any malware since the two AV's will likely "compete" against each other.
You can keep both programs, but you must disable the real-time component of one AV, keeping it as an on-demand scanner, while the other AV will provide a real-time protection.
The alternative is to uninstall one AV and keep the other.

Also, I see no software Firewall program present on your system. This will greatly help in preventing your system from being infected by malware. Please install a Firewall program because you really do need one.
Comodo -or- Jetico are good FREE software Firewall programs and are the two top programs in the ratings.

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
Download Superantispyware
  • Load Superantispyware and click the check for updates button.
  • Once the update is finished click the scan your computer button.
  • Check Perform Complete Scan and then next.
  • Superantispyware will now scan your computer and when its finished it will list all the infections it has found.
  • Make sure that they all have a check next to them and press next.
  • Click finish and you will be taken back to the main interface.
  • Click Preferences and then click the statistics/logs tab. Click the dated log and press view log and a text file will appear.
  • Copy and paste the log in your next reply.
Post back with the log from Superantispyware and a new HijackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running now.

Hey again,

- I am aware of how the two virus-scan programs can conflict and already have the one essentially disabled (Norton - since the subscription is up on it), and have AVG Free as my main virus-scan program for now.

- I actually do have a firewall set up on the computer. It is the last entry in the last HiJackThis log - "TrueVector Internet Monitor" which is part of Zone Lab's: ZoneAlarm Personal Firewall. Although it is rated poorly (that was the first time I had seen the ratings), it served me well for the past 6 years right up until these last few days when Vundo got through. I'll be upgrading to Comodo Firewall Pro, per the ratings though.

- I did as you suggested and cleared all the Cache and temp files. I followed with SuperAntiSpyware. Below are the new logs after running it (it only found 2 things).

- The computer has been running like normal since I ran VundoFix. That seemed to take care of the majority of the problem. Everything else has just been cleaning it up even more. No more BSOD!

Should I keep everything installed on the computer now?
Do you keep SuperAntiSpyware running in the background (and use it's real-time protection in addition to Windows Defender)?
What's next?

Thanks again for all your help.

-Mike

Good that you have the AV's set properly - and, yes, I see that you do have ZoneAlarm. You also had a rootkit which is gone now. ComboFix got rid of two stubborn files, and Superantispyware picked up a couple more. You have the free version of Superantispyware, so there is no real-time protection. Just exit the "bug" in the tray.

Your log looks clean.

Please set your system to hide system files.
- Go to Start and open My Computer
- Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
- Select the View Tab and, under Hidden files and folders, check Do not show hidden files and folders
- Check Hide file extensions for known file types
- Check Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
- Click Apply, then OK.

If you have not done so, please empty your Recycle Bin.

Create a new Restore Point:
- Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.
- When the utility opens, select "Create a new restore point" and click Next
- Name the restore point - something like "After infection cleaned" or "After cleaning"
- Click Create.

Delete the old Restore Points:
- Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. Click Ok.
- Click the "More Options" tab.
- Where it states "System Restore" - click Clean up.
- All of the old Restore Points will be deleted EXCEPT for the one you just created.

Reboot your computer.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster. SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for so-called spyware but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage. Update it periodically.

Install IE-SPYAD puts over 20,000 sites in your restricted zone, so you will be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that are not actually innocent at all.

* Avoid illegal sites because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside pop-ups. If you should get them, use ALT + F4 to close them.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software because most of these so-called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Let your anti-virus and anti-spyware scanners scan frequently and don't forget to update before scanning.

I suggest you perform an online virus-scan once in a while (Housecall and/or Bitdefender) because what one virus-scanner can't find, another one maybe can.

Make sure your Windows has the latest updates by going here.

More information on how to prevent malware can be found at So how did I get infected in the first place? (by Tony Klein) and Malware Prevention: Prevent Re-infection.

Happy surfing again!
