Help! Cannot Function. May Have Malware?

XP-SP2
On startup all I can get is wallpaper, no icons. Can get to programs through task manager. Cannot find or enter "explorer.exe" in task manager. Cannot use IExplorer as it appears corrupted. Could you please look at the HJT log and see if I picked something up. Greatly appreciated! Thanks.

I attempted to do a widnows update in ordeer to maybe restore missing files, but Microsoft requires IE which I downloaded a new copy but the disadvantage tool would not allow it's install, so I cannot update windows.

Hello Happy01 and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I don't see any signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean. There is a bit of housekeeping that should be done so let's do that while you are here.

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Ewido should also be uninstalled. It is now out-of-date and unsupported and has been replaced by AVG Anti-Spyware, which is also installed and active.

The HijackThis forum deals exclusively with virus and malware issues. HijackThis does not have the capability to analyze performance, hardware or application issues. For these types of issues I would suggest posting to the The techs in that forum specialize in matters pertaining to the operating system, performance and applications. Let them know that you have been to this forum and that no malware was found.

When posting to any other forum, do not post a HijackThis log or the post will simply be moved back to this forum for infection analysis. That is what HijackThis is used for and that is what we specialize in here in this forum.

Also, when posting in any other forum for assistance, give as much detail as possible regarding any issues that are occurring. The more information they have, the better the techs can analyze the issue and make any recommendations for resolving it.

Old timer, thanks for your reply. I waited a good while for response (I know you are busy) and had some other people look at it. The problem seems to have begun after installing some Bellsouth DSL software. It has some scan ware that (I believe) conflicted with my existing malware and spyware programs causing some registry files to corrupt.
If you have any ideas it would be appreciated. I'll post this in XP forum as well.

Hi Happy01. There will usually be conflicts if multiple scanning programs are installed (almost always with anti-virus programs). It is not recommended to have more than one anti-virus program or one firewall installed on a machine. I don't know that they will corrupt registry keys but they can, and usually do, cause access issues and block each other from performing. If the BellSouth software includes an anti-virus component and there was already an anti-virus installed then uninstall one or the other.
