My friend is having a really hard time with his laptop, It is shutting down without warning, mostly when downloading and when he is on msn or opening an application. He gets the msg 'FILE DETECT...' but the system shuts down before he can read the msg. the machine is running slow. He has tried to scan for viruses but the machine shuts down before the scan can complete, he cannot boot into safe mode and cannot boot from the CD! Is it a lost cause???

Try disabling the automatic reboot to see if you can read the entire error message.

To stop the shutdown:
Click on Start > Run and type: cmd
press Enter.
At the Command Prompt type: shutdown -a
press Enter.

Then download and scan with MS Malicious Software Removal Tool. Follow that with your other scans and see if you can complete them.
