Hi,

I think Google has been hijacked. The Google screen looks slightly different than normal, but the key difference is that when I try to run a search, the results are almost useless. Basically I only really get ads and the URL that I redirect to does not match the one that shows up under the description of the site.

I've already done the following steps to try and fix the problem:

1. Ran AVG (Free edition)
2. ran Ad-aware
3. ran Super Anti-spyware (in Safe mode)
4. ran SpyBot
5. ran Housecall Anti-virus
6. Ran McAfee Stinger

No matter how many items the antiviruses or ad-wares found, the problem still remains.

I finally ran HijackThis, I'd appreciate any help you guys can give me. Thanks

Hello there and welcome to BleepingComputer. My name is Charles and I will be dealing with your log today.

Scan again with HijackThis and put a checkmark next to each of the following entries (if present):

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O1 - Hosts: 66.98.148.65 auto.search.msn.com
O1 - Hosts: 66.98.148.65 auto.search.msn.es127.0.0.1 serial.alcohol-soft.com
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Install.exe] C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{114E74F2-2498-4485-AA1A-A9FC27B97BBB}: NameServer = 194.54.90.226
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{8B7CF7CD-16E7-407C-9690-09615E539C06}: NameServer = 194.54.90.226
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{A245B271-C374-4A3D-817B-6342A778412E}: NameServer = 194.54.90.226
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\..\{114E74F2-2498-4485-AA1A-A9FC27B97BBB}: NameServer = 194.54.90.226

Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix checked button.

Keeping HijackThis open:
Click Open the Misc Tools section | Delete a File on Reboot.
Copy and paste the following into the box, then click Open:
C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe
It will ask you if you want to reboot your computer now, please select Yes.

Go to Control Panel. - If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category. If you are in Classic View, go to the next step .
Double-click the Network Connections icon
Right-click the Local Area Connection icon and select Properties.
Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button.
Be sure Obtain DNS server address automatically is selected.
OK your way out.

Go to Start > Run and type in cmd
Click OK.
This will open a command prompt.
Type or copy and paste the following line in the command window:

ipconfig /flushdns

Hit Enter
Exit the command window

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe
Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the Desktop loads save the text that will open (report.txt), and post it in your next reply.

Please include the report.txt along with a new HijackThis log in your reply.
Thanks,
Charles

If you are pleased with the service I have offered, you may like to consider making a donation. Posted Image

Hello again.
Scan again with HijackThis and put a checkmark next to each of the following entries (if present):

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\perfc000.dat

Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix checked button.

Download KillBox from the following link :
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/killbox.php
Unzip the folder to your desktop.

Start Killbox.exe
Select the "Delete on Reboot" option.
Click on the "All Files" button (!important!),which will then flash green.
Copy the complete text in bold below to the clipboard by highlighting the filepaths and pressing Control + C:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\perfc000.dat

Open 'file' in the killbox menu on top and choose Paste from clipboard
You must use the file menu--pasting by right-clicking the mouse will only enter one file.
Then press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it.
Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be removed on next reboot and asks if you would like to reboot now, click "yes".
Click OK at any Pending File Rename Operations prompts, let me know if there appear.
If you don't get that message, reboot manually.
Your computer should reboot now.

Please run Panda's ActiveScan.
Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
A new window will open, click the Check Now button.
Enter your personal details.
Click the big Scan Now button.
It will ask to install various content - please allow this.
It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan, which may take a while.
When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan.
When the scan has finished - if anything malicious is found - click the See Report button.
Click Save Report and save the file to your Desktop, so you can post this log in your next reply.

Scan again with HijackThis and post the new log in your next post, along with the Panda report.
Thanks,
Charles

Hi again,

I did as you asked and here's what happened.

After I ran Hijack This the first time and tried to Fix the perfc000.dll, I got an error:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modBackup_MakeBackup(sItem=O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\perfc000.dat)
Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argument

Please email me at merijn@spywareinfo.com, reporting the following:
* What you were trying to fix when the error occurred, if applicable
* How you can reproduce the error
* A complete HijackThis scan log, if possible

Windows version: Windows NT 5.01.2600
MSIE version: 6.0.2900.2180
HijackThis version: 1.99.1

This message has been copied to your clipboard.
Click OK to continue the rest of the scan.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I continued following your instructions, and at the Pending File Rename Operations stage, I did get one:
PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process

Lastly I ran Panda ActiveScan, here's the log:

It looks to me like it has been removed anyway, I can only see one file that needs removing in Safe Mode:

F:\WINDOWS\gendel32.exe

Then reboot and let me know how things seem to be running now.
Thanks,
Charles

All done. I deleted the file and everything (meaning Google) seems back to normal. I never even knew I had so many viruses/trojans on my computer.

Can you tell me what I could do to better protect my system? I usually try to keep up to date on the lastest MS security bulletins. I also use ZoneAlarm (firewall) and AVG as my anti-virus (both of which are up to date) and I use Ad-Aware to scan for anything out of the ordinary.

Are those products good enough or should I be using something better?

Thanks again for all your help.

Here is my standard speech I give to everybody when they are clean from malware. Some of them you obviously have installed, but a few would be worthy additions. The tutorial at the end is also very helpful in stopping this kind of thing ever happening again in the future.

Now that you're free from malware, please follow these simple steps to decrease the likelihood of getting re-infected again:

Set your system to not show all files.
Navigate to Start | My Computer | Tools | Folder Options.
Select the View tab. Under the "Hidden Files and Folders" heading, select "Show hidden files and folders".
Check: Hide file extensions for known file types
Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.

Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.
Either enable 'Automatic Updates' under Start | Control Panel | Automatic Updates, or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:
Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.
Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.
SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.
Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place
Thanks and happy computing,
Charles
