Very Slow Desktop Computer / Printer Not Working

Hi.

I am trying to help someone with their desktop computer. This computer runs very slowly and often freezes. Also, the printer does not work. I defragmented the harddrive and ran the disk cleanup program. This seemed to help the situation. (The computer was no longer slow and the printer worked again). However, this only lasted for a few days, and now the problem is the same as before.

I forgot to mention that sometimes the internet is completely unresponsive. For example, I'll go online and no windows will come onto the screen. I have to control/alt/delete out of the internet at times, and sometimes even that doesn't work. I hope that someone can make sense of all of this from the HJT log i posted.

Hello TBaloney1 and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I don't see any signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean.

There are a couple of housekeeping items that can be cleaned up due to missing files so let's do that while you are here.

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Other than that the log only shows that there are some updates that should be performed on this PC. Both the operating system and the java version are quite out of date.

Your operating system is extremely out of date. By not keeping the OS updated the computer is vulnerable to every infection on the net and in emails today and trying to repair an unpatched system is virtually impossible. For update purposes, Microsoft has even stopped supporting a system that is this far out of date. Go to the Windows Update site and install Service Pack 2. Once that is done, go back to the Windows Update site and install all available Critical Updates. This will patch the system with the most current security fixes and plug all the known holes which are present on this system. If you are not on a broadband connection the Service Pack can be obtained from Microsoft for a nominal shipping fee.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
Note: If there is an Update XX in the name then the "XX" in the version will be whatever the latest version is.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0 Update XX (if present).
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_6_0_XX-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
That's all I see in the log. The HijackThis forum deals exclusively with virus and malware issues. HijackThis does not have the capability to analyze performance, hardware or application issues. For these types of issues I would suggest posting to the The techs in that forum specialize in matters pertaining to the operating system, performance and applications. Let them know that you have been to this forum and that no malware was found.

When posting to any other forum, do not post a HijackThis log or the post will simply be moved back to this forum for infection analysis. That is what HijackThis is used for and that is what we specialize in here in this forum.

Also, when posting in any other forum for assistance, give as much detail as possible regarding any issues that are occurring. The more information they have, the better the techs can analyze the issue and make any recommendations for resolving it.
