I am having problems accessing a newly installed external hard drive. Keep getting the "windows explorer has encountered a problem" message , after which my computer goes back to my desktop. Everything else seems to run correctly. Please note that I am a noob about these things. Please help. I can move content onto the drive succesfully, it's just opening it without resets or freezes that is causing the problems. thank you in advance.

Is this a hard drive that you bought pre-configured, or is it a hard drive that you've bought a drive caddy for? If it's pre-configured, then I'd suspect an issue with the hardware of the external drive. If it's your caddy, then I'd suggest checking the jumper settings on the hard drive to ensure that they're correctly set.
