My browser was hijacked on May 27. My computer is running Microsoft Vista. I managed to get browser back but am still having one problem. The follwoing two dialog boxes continually appear every few seconds. The first one states that "Windows Explorer has stopped working. Windows is checking for a solution to the problem" That box closes then a second appears stating: "Windows Explorer is restarting". This problem started at the same time as the initial browser hijack. I am unable use the Explorer feature at all. I am able to launch programs from desk top icons, go online and use outlook.

I ran updated versions of McAffee anti-virus, Ad-Aware, Spybot, House Call, Stinger.

I ran Hijack This after running the above and here is a copy of the log:

Hello there and welcome to BleepingComputer. My name is Charles and I will be dealing with your log today.

You are using TrendMicro's HijackThis which is still in the testing process at the moment, so there may be some problems with it. Therefore, please download version 1.99.1 of HijackThis from the following link:
HJT v1.99.1

Make a permanent folder:
Click Start | My Computer | Local Disk (C: ) | Program Files.
In the menu bar at the top, go to File | New | Folder.
That will create a folder named "New Folder", which you can rename to "HijackThis". You have now created C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Now get your HijackThis.exe file and place it in your folder.

Scan again and post back the new log, please.
Thanks,
Charles

If you are pleased with the service I have offered, you may like to consider making a donation. Posted Image

Hi Charles,

Due to the "Windows has Stopped Working" problem I described about I am unable to use the Start feature as you described. Every time I try the above mentioned dialog boxes pup up and the bar at the bottome of the desk top refreshes and whatever I lose was trying to do.

I did down manage to follow the link and run htj v.9.11.9 as directed. When I did I recieved the follownuing error messages. The first started with a yellow triangle with ! insode ans stated:

"For some reason your system denied access to the Host file. If any hijacked domains are in the file Hijack this may not be able to fix these.

If that happens you will need to edit the file yourself. To do this click start run and type "c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" press enter. Find the files mentioned and delete them. Save the file as "hosts" (with quotes) and reboot."

The second error message that popped up stated:

"An unexpected error has occurred at proceedure modMain_CheckOther1Item()error#75-Path/File Acess Error"

It also asked for the error to be roported to merijn@spyware.com

I continued to run Hijack This regarldless and here is the log:

My system is acting up I need to reboot and will attach the Hijack This log an a minute ot two:

Ed

I can not do this. The two mentioned Windows Explorer error/dialog boxes keep popping up every few seconds and when the last one closes my entire desktop refreshes closing anything I am attempting to do. The only programs I can launch or access are those that have short cuts on the desk top. Those I have to click on before the two problem boxes appear. I can create a new folder on the desk top but that is about it. The time between the Windows Explorer error boxes appearing as about 7 seconds which doen not allow me enough time to perform the require tasks. I created that desktop folder and have downloaded HijackThis but before I can uncompress the files the desktop refreshes and everything closes. There simply is not enough time to perform the task. Is there anykind of work around? Any prorgam (IE, Outlook, PhotoShop, etc.) that I have opened from a link on the desktop stays open after the refresh takes place but anything eles closes.

I have not heard back from anyone since my last post. Since then I have managed to get the hijack.exe into a folder labled Hijack. I managed to drag that folder in the C:/ area of my drive but I could not get it into the Programs folder as directed. Each time I tried I get a box telling me that I need administrators permission to do so. Why i don't know since this is my personal computer. If that admisitrators box did not show up I'd probably have the Hijack folder in the programs folder where you wanted it. Will it work with the file just in C:?

Please help.

Hello again, god job on moving HijackThis
Please print off a copy of these instructions, and also save them to a Notepad file on your desktop, so they are easily accessible.
We are going to boot into Safe Mode later in the fix, and there is no internet access.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Open the file and it will extract the contents (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
Don't run it yet.

Scan again with HijackThis and put a checkmark next to each of the following entries (if present):

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B8C5186E-EC37-4889-9C2E-F73649FFB7BB} - C:\Program Files\Video ActiveX Access\iesplg.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: Protection Bar - {31615D5C-5126-448A-818A-A7CDFEE85A9B} - C:\Program Files\Video ActiveX Access\iesbpl.dll

Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix checked button.

Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode.
This is done by rebooting Windows and pressing F8 at boot/Windows startup, usually right after the beep.
Then select Safe Mode from the list.
Make sure you choose the option without Networking Support.

Set your system to show all files.
Navigate to Start | My Computer | Tools | Folder Options.
Select the View tab. Under the "Hidden Files and Folders" heading, select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.

Next, please find and delete the following folder (if present):

C:\Program Files\Video ActiveX Access

Open the SmitfraudFix folder again.
Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Please include rapport.txt, along with a new HijackThis log in your next reply.
Thanks,
Charles

Hi,

I downloaded SmitfraudFix as directed. I then re-ran HijackThis as directed and deleted the above listed files. I then rebooted into safe mode. (I should mention that all the while the "Windows Explorer has stopped working" and "Windows Explorer is restarting" boxes continued to appear and cause the desk top the refresh over and over - even in safe mode) I then managed to set the hidden file to show. I then clicked the SmitfraudFix icon and recieved an error message saying that this verison is only support by Windows 2000 and XP. I mentioned above that my machine is running Windows Vista. I have been unable to proceed past that point.

What next?

Thank you.

Ed

Oh sorry, I didn't realise that SmitFraudFix did not work on Vista, we can try this tool instead:

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Now, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. This is done by rebooting Windows and pressing F8 at boot/Windows startup, usually right after the beep. Then select Safe Mode from the list.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.

Please post that log in your next reply.
Thanks,
Charles

Hi again,

I ran smitRem as instructed but was unable to ge to the log text file in "C" due to those recurring Windows Explorer message boxes popping up. I'll try again this evening when I get home from work. It is a matter of trying to beat thost two messages. If Vista didn't insist on asking me if I am the administrator I would have gotten it done this morning. That is the main problem I am still having.

Sorry for this taking so long. I'll get back to you this evening.

Ed
