I was browsing the web yesterday when suddenly I got a bunch of "antivirus" software installing itself. The one that I saw was called 'WinAntiVirus2006' or something similar. I tried to cancel the installation but by then I had pop up windows. I use firefox and now every 10 minutes or so, IE7 opens up and then opens 50 tabs by itself. Any idea how to get rid of this thing?

Hello and welcome to BC.

Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove

WinAntiVirus Pro 2007

===============================

Please download ComboFix

Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop.

Close all browsers.
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log taken after a reboot.
  • Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.
P.S. Please make sure that the wordwrap is turned off in the Format menu of the Notepad when you save the HijackThis log.

Hi Ryan,

Unless I am missing something I cannot see any evidence of an active antivirus application on your system. Please download one of these (free for personal use) anti-virus programs RIGHT NOW, update it and run a full scan. Have it fix anything it finds.

Grisoft AVG from here : http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
AntiVir Free from here : http://www.free-av.com/
Avast Home Edition from here : http://www.avast.com/eng/down_home.html

Note: You must only use 1 (one) AV at a time because if you have 2 or more AVs running at the same time, they will conflict with each other and make your security less reliable.

============================================

Please download Ccleaner and save it to your desktop.
Tutorial for CCleaner
During the installation be sure to UN-check the box for "Ccleaner Yahoo Toolbar" unless you want it. Do not scan with it yet.

=======================================

Download AVG Anti Spyware

Use the link at the bottom of the page under "AVG Anti-Spyware Free for Windows"

Posted Image
  • Install AVG Anti Spyware
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG
  • On the top of the main screen click Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
  • On the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
  • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
  • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
When you have finished updating, EXIT AVG Anti Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
